Low back pain – a diagnostic approach

Adults suffer from back discomfort, which is one of the most frequent health issues. It's defined as pain and discomfort that's placed below the costal margin and above the superior gluteal line, with or without concomitant lower-limb pain, and it's considered chronic if it lasts three months or more.

Chronic back pain (CBP) is a multifaceted medical disorder characterised by a wide range of symptoms4. It is also a common cause of morbidity and impairment, second only to headache on the magnitude of painful diseases that impact people.

The diagnosis of low back pain is critical for primary care physicians, despite its difficulty. Most patients with low back pain can be treated in this setting if the doctor has the necessary skills to elaborate the differential diagnosis and identify the various pain components. As a result, the clinical history, physical and neurological examinations, requests for further exams, and use of diagnostic instruments are all necessary.
This necessitates proper therapy planning, with a focus on CBP patients, but also balancing the patient's expectations for the therapeutic outcome.
