I want to tell you about my street. First of all, I want you to know you are not to expect some classic, sophisticated images. It is just a regular, suburban Nigerian Street.

My Street at dawn

So, the street I stay at is called Akpan Essien Lane. It is found along Ikot Ekpene Road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. If you are wondering what this is, let me give you a brief. Those words used to name the street are from the Ibibio Language. Ibibio is the most commonly spoken language in this part of the state. As such you don't need to stress yourself trying to produce the words correctly.

A key reference point.

The street is a branch off the main street which is Akpan Essien Street. It comes out at another major road in the State called Abak Road. So, you can enter the street from either Abak road or Ikot Ekpene road and burst out at the other end.

The street is well built and tarred thankfully. It is basically a residential area with very few businesses operating in it. Majorly, there are just a few scattered provision shops. One prominent place business is a hotel located at the far end of the street towards Abak road.

However, there are two prominent buildings. First is the National Population Commission office and second is the worship hall of the Apostolic Church. At the Ikot Ekpene end is a big refuse dump site which collects the waste from all the adjoining streets. Along the street is another lane called Iboko Lane which also leads out to Ikot Ekpene road.

Thankfully, due to the nature of the street, we don't have issues with flood water during this rainy season as some areas do. A beautiful feature of this street is the serene environment it offers. Since it is a residential area, noise and rowdiness is great absent apart from when there is a religious program. Commercial vehicles rarely ply this route maybe because of the low level of activities and the low population. However, this is a something the occupants have to deal with since you cannot easily find a means to commute to other locations from this street unless you step out to the road.

Also, the quite nature has favoured some criminal activities mostly in previous years though currently, security is of little concern as there has been significant peace and safety for a long time now without any incidence of robbery or any other crimes. Asides from mobility which is a minor challenge if you don't stroll towards the main road, accessibility is quite very easy.

Quite Serene

The street is well powered and there is sufficient water supply as most houses have dug their bore holes. There are no ghettos or joints along my street making it a very ideal area to live and have peace.
