Hello steemians,
This post tells a little about the fish and fisheries of the New Calabar River.
The New Calabar River is located at the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It cuts across several communities in Rivers State, Nigeria. It is one of the major Rivers in the region where fishing is carried out. Major fishing gears used in this river include drum traps, cast net and Gill net.
Example of fish caught in this river is the Chrysitchtys nigrodigitatus (Silver cat fish).
Unfortunately, the oil pollution situation in the Niger Delta is also affecting the river in some of it's location making it unsuitable for domestic use and also affecting the fishes of the river (according to the local fishermen interviewed).
I am so happy that I am opportuned to undertake this research with one of my lecturers, Dr S.A. Nwafili.
Thank you for reading through.
