The river catfish is a very common edible aquatic species in the Nigerian biosphere most especially in the Niger-Delta region. It is a good tasting fish with moderate fat content and high protein values. The catfish makes up as much as 20% of the fisherman's harvest from the aquatic environment in the Niger-Delta.
They are eaten in main meals as a major source of protein by fish lovers and also they are very popular around barbeque centers. Infact the barbeque catfish is the most commonly eaten barbeque fish in Nigeria. After making his catch, the fisherman settles down to sorting out the fishes by sizes and by choice of those to sell or for personal consumption.

What would be sold will be taken to the local fish markets. The fish sellers sell some fresh and whatever is left is smoked for preservation.
