The Niger-Delta region in the southern part of Nigeria is the wettest part of the country. It is a region with extensive aquatic environments and water bodies such as rivers, streams, swamps, lakes, ponds and brackish water systems. Here the main preoccupation of the locals living in close proximity to the water bodies is fishing.

The fisherfolks in the Niger-Delta are mainly of two types, the first type is the commercial fisherman whom catch fishes from the aquatic environment and sells to fish mongers whom in turn sells at the markets to consumers while the second type are the fisherfolks whom fish in the local water bodies for personal consumption.

The subsistence fisherfolks are mostly stream fishermen whom don't have boats and other fishing paraphernalia to venture into large water bodies and make commerce of their fishing activities. They mostly are just equiped with their hooks and fish traps suited for the slowly flowing stream waters and are content getting 50% or more of their animal protein from the aquatic environment.

Their catches here are mostly small river catfishes, tilapia, crabs and electric fishes. They get a modest catch and this they use for personal consumption.

Stream fishing as an aquacultural practice in the Niger-Delta region is of great importance in providing the protein needs for the majority of the subsistence fisherfolks whom are poor and unemployed Nigerians.

I do hope you enjoyed reading my article on stream fishing as a subsistence aquacultural practice in the Niger-Delta. Thanks for your time reading, bye for now and have a lovely day.
