Swamps are pieces of land that are normally filled with water. Swamps normally have vegetation in them. Some have trees, others have shrubs. Swamps normally have clay soil, hydric soils which are all good for water retention.
Swamps have various uses as they are habitants to various plants. Some plants like yams, sugarcanes and rice do so well in areas with a lot of water like swamps. Swamps are also habitants to various animals like frogs and fish.
Swamps also prevent flooding because they absorb and retain excess water from other waterbodies and from our general surroundings. However, many swamps have been drained therefore causing flooding as excess water has nowhere to go. Most people drain swamps to get extra land for development especially in urban areas where land is getting really scarce.
Swamps also harbour insects and are their breeding ground like mosquitoes which cause diseases like malaria.
However, the advantages of swamps outweigh their disadvantages therefore we should endeavour collectively to protect them to prevent catastrophes like flooding. Governments have tried to fight swamp reclamation however, it is still going on allover the world.
Therefore, we can try to protect swamps by educating each other about their purposes and effects of destroying them.
