The near side of Styx

Sunset Memorial Park, Hoquiam, Wash.

No, it's not the river Styx that you see through the trees here; it's the bay of Grays Harbor at its narrowest point. I think it looks somewhat like a river here, and since this is a photo of a graveyard, Styx came to mind.

"The near side of Styx" sounds like the title or opening of a poem. I'll share the photo here, but don't be surprised if you stumble across it on Hive at some point in the future, as a cover photo for a poem or some piece of fiction.

Sunset Memorial Park sits atop the east end of College Hill in Hoquiam, approximately 200 feet above the bay. Three sides of its lower reaches are wooded, mostly evergreen like you see here, but there are bands of birch trees too.

The older section of the graveyard has gravestones with death dates ranging back to the 1880s, near the time that Hoquiam was incorporated. Many of those gravestones are of the more traditional, stand-up variety, not the flat plaques we see here in the new section. They're more photogenic, I guess, but the older section is located down near the treeline and doesn't offer the best views.

I'm not sure about this photo. Of course, I love the clouds, and the water in the distance. The dark fits the mood of a graveyard. But can anyone actually tell we're in graveyard, or is it too dark? I can't really determine that, because I know where I took the photo; I don't need to see the row of graves to know where we are.

Feedback is always welcome. I mean, does it work or does it just look stupid? :)

Have a great day.

Do you know an American writer Edgar Lee Masters?
I read his Spoon River poem in translation.

Spoon River Anthology
Spoon River Anthology (1915), by Edgar Lee Masters, is a collection of short free verse poems that collectively narrates the epitaphs of the residents of Spoon River, a fictional small town named after the Spoon River, which ran near Masters' home town of Lewistown, Illinois. The aim of the poems is to demystify rural and small town American life. The collection includes 212 separate characters, in all providing 244 accounts of their lives, losses, and manner of death. Many of the poems contain cross-references that create an unabashed tapestry of the community.

No, I'm not familiar. It sounds very interesting. Hoquiam is worthy of a series of poems; we certainly have characters!

In my opinion the photo works. It has a real haunting feeling effect.

And the sky is nice

Thank you! After looking at it so long, it's hard to judge. And I'm new to photography. The feedback really helps.
