Punctuation marks are simply the symbols that a writer uses in a piece for the purpose of giving meaning to what is being written. Punctuation marks helps a writer to communicate his or her unique feelings and interest right across to the reader without any alterations.
Example of these punctuation marks include; full stop(.), question mark(?), exclamation mark (!),comma (,), bracket (),dash (-), semicolon (;),colon (:), hyphen (-), quotation marks(''), apostrophe ('), asterisk (), the three-dot ellipsis (...) and oblique (/).
Now, to begin with, full stops which are also called periods are the most widely used punctuation mark in the whole world π and it's mainly because it is used at the end of our sentences in our various write-ups. Question marks on the other hand, are used when our statements are in the form of questions just as the name goes, question markβ. Sometimes we make statements with tonations that seems like we're in a surprised state or kinda speaking on top of our voice a little or exclaiming. In such instances, the writer has no choice but to use the exclamation mark!. A comma is also an extremely common punctuation mark. The comma is used as a separation device or symbol with initial phrases in order to separate these phrases from adverbs or adverbial phrase such as however, therefore, moreover and among others. PLEASE NOTE! Semicolons are rather used before adverbs in situations where a preceding pause is required, as in,
We may look weak; nevertheless we'll prevail.
Commas are again used to separate terms of address from the rest of a particular sentence, for example; Gracelove, kindly show me the gift please. They're also use to introduce a piece of direct quotation, lists and in numeral ratios as well.
Hyphens may be used in write-ups when words begins with 'self' or when words has a prefix of 'former' thus, something being in the past, for instance; ex-president, ex-wife and among others. Writers have to also take precautions when using quotation marks. If there's a statement such as 'she said' following a piece of direct quotation or if it involves questions or exclamations, the question mark or exclamation mark or the comma is place before the second inverted comma, as in,
'Of course not,' she said. OR
'How are you faring?' she asked. OR
'Come over here!' he said.
Most of us make less use of apostrophes or sometimes fail to even make use of it simply because we do not want to bear the worry of not knowing where to place it. Trust me! I also went through that same hell. But it's so simple, especially with apostrophe s or s apostrophe. Apostrophe s is used when singular nouns are used and s apostrophe is used when dealing with plural nouns. Words with one syllable and has a final s, x or z at the end usually uses apostrophe s ('s) but those with three or more syllables must go with s apostrophe (s'). Asterisk and dashes are mostly used to replace mean or swear words like f--k of (fuck of) and etc.
As we are so determine to raise the climax of readers through our write-ups, we must also be aware of how often and when to use these punctuation marks. With this little explanation, I strongly believe steemians with such difficulties will improve in the writing skills when it comes to the use of punctuation marks. I hope to see more interesting and amazing write-ups from steemians as we steem on.π―ππΎπ₯°π
