The film was written, directed and performed by comedy master Charlie Chaplin. It was the first audio film created against the background of the German Nazi Party's accelerated outward expansion and wanton slaughter of Jews after World War II. It was released in the United States on October 15, 1940, satirizing the ugly behavior of Hitler, the German Nazi leader, who wantonly slaughtered Jews and expressing his desire for democracy and freedom. The release date of the film is the peak period of Hitler's massacre of Jews, and it is also the heyday of Germany's invasion of France. Chaplin still insisted on creating under the double pressure of United States company and politics, and paid for himself. It took more than two years from writing to shooting, thus mocking Hitler's dictatorship. Chaplin's courage and conscience are really admirable.

In the story, Chaplin plays the role of two horns, one of whom is a Jewish barber. He was enlisted in the First World War and saved Schultz (the minister of Hickler). After being injured and losing his memory, he returned to be a barber after leaving the hospital and dared to fight against the oppression of the German Nazi Party. The other is the great dictator Hickler, alluding to Hitler, who has the ambition to rule the world and maimed millions of Jews. In the play, the Jewish barber's girlfriend is Hannah of Jewish nationality, who is kind and brave and never gives in to the persecution of the German Nazi Party.

Jewish barber is a common citizen, humorous. After he retired from the army, he was treated in hospital for several years. During this period, great changes have taken place in the world. Hitler, the Nazi leader, is Austrian. He imitates German in his speech, but is mixed with English. The film makes a mockery of his speech style. Hickler's dictatorship promulgated many policies to persecute Jews, which made Jews unable to live a normal life. The barber's neighbor is smart and capable Hannah, but she can't find a stable job because of racial discrimination. She can only earn a small income by washing clothes for others. Once she saw the Nazi stormtroopers bullying Jewish shops in the street, she just verbally reprimanded the ugliness of stormtroopers, but she was bullied by stormtroopers instead. The Jewish barber returned to the barber's shop and planned to reopen it, but found that the Nazi stormtroopers had written Jewish marks on the window of the store. The barber was extremely dissatisfied and fought with these stormtroopers. Hannah came to help after finding out, and finally knocked the stormtroopers out. At this time, Hannah had a good impression on the brave barber. She told the barber that "all people should unite and fight back against Nazi soldiers", which reflected the Jewish desire for freedom. The Nazi stormtroopers came back to seek revenge from the barber, and asked the barber to help him write Jewish symbols. The barber once again clashed with stormtroopers, but they were outnumbered. A group of stormtroopers surrounded him and planned to hang him on a telephone pole. When Commander Schultz discovered that the barber was the soldier who rescued himself during World War I, he ordered the stormtroopers not to disturb the Jews in this area again, so that the life of the barber and Hannah was temporarily calm.

Hickler lived in Hickler Palace and was busy ruling the world every day. He asked people to show his greatness with portraits and statues, but painters and sculptors just perfunctory things. He asked some officials to invent some advanced wartime equipment, such as bulletproof clothes and hat parachutes, but often failed. He often summoned lower-ranking generals to keep abreast of the war situation. When Hickler planned to occupy Austria, he intended to borrow money from Epstein, a Jew, and therefore suspended the persecution of Jews. The Jewish people in the street can walk freely and open their own shops boldly. The long-lost freedom makes them feel like they are reborn and rekindle their hope for life and love for their hometown. Barber and Hannah can work with peace of mind and exchange emotions in a quiet life. Barber's bravery, kindness, simplicity and humor attract Hannah, while Hannah's beauty, liveliness and justice attract barber, and they gradually fall in love.

However, Epstein, a Jew, was dissatisfied with the persecution of his compatriots, and refused to lend money to the Nazi Party, which made the ambitious Hickler delay his plan to occupy Austria. The angry Hickler began to slaughter the Jews madly, and the quiet life of the Jews was broken again. Hickler intends to let Schultz send out the vanguard to annihilate the Jewish residential area, but the rational Schultz knows that doing so is cruel and not conducive to the interests of the Nazi Party and the country, so he disobeyed Hickler's order and was put in a concentration camp. When Schultz left, he warned Hickler that "your great cause is doomed to fail, because it is based on the stupidity of persecuting innocent people, and your policy is more than crime, which has already made a big mistake". This sentence further ridiculed Hickler's Hickler delivered a speech to destroy Jews, which dashed the hope that Jews would regain their freedom, and they began to face a bloody massacre. Most Jews thought that they could take refuge with the barber and Hannah.

However, after the vanguard heard the news of Schultz's arrest, the barber lost his protective umbrella, and the vanguard immediately broke their peaceful life. The barber and Hannah hid on the roof, looked at the sky, and planned to go to Austria, a free country, to pursue their free life. At this time, Schultz escaped from the concentration camp, found the barber, held a small meeting, discussed the plan to get rid of Hickler, but needed a person to sacrifice, because no one wanted to die, this plan was temporarily lost. When Hickler learned that Schultz had escaped, he quickly searched the barber and arrested Schultz and the barber together. Hannah and her family couldn't stand the persecution of the Nazi Party, and all of them moved to Austria, a free country. Hannah lived happily in Austria, and often wrote letters to encourage hairdressers to come here to share their happiness after they got out of prison.

Hickler quickly extended his talons to Austria, and he was ready for the armed forces. However, at this time, Italy's naparini (alluding to Mussolini) began to move troops to the Austrian front, thus hindering hickler's attack plan.Hickler had to invite naparini to negotiate and ask him to withdraw. After naparini arrived in Germany, hickler made difficulties everywhere to show that he was stronger than the other side. Naparini was a big man with a strong voice, which showed hickler's weakness everywhere, which greatly reduced his spirit.Hickler and naparini started negotiations at the buffet. Naparini asked hickler to sign an agreement that both sides did not infringe Austria before withdrawing. Hickler did not agree, and the two began to quarrel fiercely. However, hickler planned to sign an agreement first and then sneak into Austria when naparini withdrew. At this time, the barber and Schultz escaped from prison. Because the barber was similar to hickler, Schultz encouraged him to pretend to be hickler and join the German army with him. Therefore, they boldly went to the Austrian border, and the barber was successfully mistaken for their leader by the German troops stationed at the border. However, the real hickler changed into civilian clothes, ready to join the army in a boat, but was arrested as a fugitive.Because the barber did not understand the military, Schultz guided the army to successfully occupy Austria. The Jewish residents in Austria were persecuted, and the Hannah family could not avoid it.At the celebration meeting, the barber needs to give a speech in his capacity as hickler. At this time, as the representative of the oppressed nation, he intends to spread his desire for democracy and freedom in every corner of the world in a powerful language. Therefore, he made a great and warm speech, which read as follows: "I'm sorry, I don't want to be an emperor. That's not what I should do,I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I want to help everyone, Jewish, non Jewish, black and white. We all need to help each other. People should do the same.We all want to live in each other's happiness rather than inflict pain on each other. We don't want to hate and despise each other. This world can accommodate you and me. The earth is rich and can support all of us. Life could have become free and beautiful. But we lost our way, greed poisoned people's souls, hatred blocked the world, and let us step into the abyss of suffering of cannibalism. We are developing rapidly, but we are also self enclosed. Big industry has brought material civilization, but people have become destitute. Our knowledge makes us eccentric, our wisdom is cold and merciless, our ambition is too big but lack of feeling, we need human nature more than machines, we need kindness and kindness more than intelligence, without these qualities, life will become cruel and merciless, and finally have nothing.Airplanes and broadcasting bring us closer. The original intention of these inventions is to arouse human kindness, to arouse the brotherhood of people all over the world, and to unite us.Now, my voice can be heard all over the world, millions of men, women and children in despair, victims of the system, innocent people who have been tortured and imprisoned. I want to say to those who can hear me: do not despair. The suffering we are suffering now is the result of greed, the bitter fruit of those who are afraid of human progress, and the hatred between people will eventually dissipate,Dictators will perish, and the power they have seized from the people will be returned to the people.

As long as mankind does not perish, freedom will never disappear.Soldiers, don't let those clothed animals despise you, enslave you, manipulate your life and death, do not let people prescribe what you should do, what you should think, what you should accept, and do not let those who practice and brainwash you all day long and treat you as livestock again as cannon fodder,Don't listen to those psychologically twisted perverts and iron hearted war machines. You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are human beings. You all have love for human beings in your heart. You should not hate. Only those who have no love will hate. Those who have no love and those who have no love are abnormal.Soldiers, fight not for slavery, but for freedom. This is what Luke 17 says: the kingdom of God is in the hearts of men, not one or some, but all, you.You are capable people, the ability to make machines and the ability to create happiness. You have the ability to make life free and beautiful and make life more meaningful. Then, let us use these abilities in the name of democracy, let us unite, let us strive for a new world, a beautiful world, where all people can live and work in peace and contentment, children can look forward to the future, and the old people can spend their old age peacefully. Those clothed birds and beasts climb to the top of power by such promises, but they lie a lot, and they fail to fulfill their promises,Never do it.Dictators are free, but they enslave all the people. Now let us fight for the realization of this hope, let us fight for the freedom of the whole world, eliminate the estrangement between countries, eliminate human greed, eliminate hatred and narrow mindedness, and strive for the establishment of a rational world, a scientific development world that can lead mankind to a happy and well-off life.Soldiers, let's unite in the name of democracy! "The barber's impassioned words inspired the hearts of every oppressed people, every enslaved heart, and every heart with conscience.Hannah was listening to the sonorous voice of barber in a corner of Austria. It was like the soul was liberated. The barber expressed his love for Hannah and his beautiful imagination of their future life through radio. They believed that they would get rid of the shackles, walk out of the dark, and finally be free and usher in the light.

Although the appearance of Jewish barber is similar to that of dictator hickler, there are essential differences in character and pursuit. Barber with love and kindness yearns for a happy life of freedom, peace and mutual help. Hickler, with ambition, ruthlessness and indifference to conquer the world, enslaves soldiers, devoid of human nature, tramples on freedom and injures the people.Dictatorship will be ridiculed by the people when they step on people's lives to expand their land.Only a world full of love and freedom is the place people yearn for and the fertile land for happiness. For the sake of a beautiful world, for freedom and happiness, and for living and working in peace and contentment, let us use gentleness instead of coldness, kindness and love for hatred, and mutual help for selfishness.
