Godzilla: The Planet Eater, begins where Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle ends. The city of Mechagodzilla and the last technology of earthlings are destroyed, many people and Belusaludos fell in battle with the monster. Godzilla himself is damaged, but not defeated. The monster froze on the approaches to the city, but life still glimmers inside it, and people no longer have the means to inflict any damage on it.
Moreover, clashes begin between the people and the Belusaludos on the base ship because of the different understanding of the actions of Galu-Gu and Captain Sakaki, who could not inflict the final blow on Godzilla when there was still such an opportunity. At the same time, the exif aliens begin to interpret the events of the battle, in particular, Sakaki's immunity to nanometal, as a manifestation of divine will and incline most people both on the ship and on the planet to their faith. They believe, that there is a monster of divine power capable of defeating Godzilla. And they are trying to summon him to Earth.
Who will become the enemy of Godzilla in the third part of the animated film has been known for a long time. Who, if not the main enemy of the radioactive lizard, is King Ghidora, the most powerful monster in the Toho universe. But this is a very different King Ghidora than the one that appeared in the classic films of the Sheva and Heizei era. Polygon Pictures has updated and rethought a monster similar to the fabulous Serpent Gorynych.
King Ghidorah in Godzilla: The Planet Eater is a creature from another dimension, equal in power to the gods and really capable of devouring entire planets. Nothing in our world can harm a monster as long as the one who summoned it directs Gidora. The new King Ghidorah still has the same three heads, however, on necks tens of kilometers long, which emerge from local black holes - portals to another dimension. But the torso and the canon wings, which Godzilla loves to tear off, he no longer has.
Due to the rethinking of the concept of King Gidora, there is almost no fight between the two huge creatures. The main battle takes place in the head of Captain Sakaki - this is a battle of the human principle in him with hatred for Godzilla and contempt for himself. For the third picture, the creators of the cartoon finally disavowed their main idea: Godzilla is not at all a monster striving to destroy humanity, he is rather the guardian of the planet, one of the forces of nature that is trying to protect the Earth, including from people harming it. Godzilla is a hurricane, flood, earthquake. You can be afraid of him, but you cannot hate him. It is worth living in peace with nature, like the same aborigines whom the returning exiled earthlings met on Earth, and Godzilla will freeze into a huge motionless mountain - a frightening, but harmless, ancient dormant guardian.
Actually, these frankly green connotations, obtrusively pushed by the authors of the cartoon, as well as lengthy reflections on divine destruction and sacrifices, somewhat spoil the already not very strong cartoon. There is no special dynamics in Godzilla: The Planet Eater; fantastic military equipment, as in the first two films, is no longer there; the plot develops very slowly and monotonously; the picture does not please with an abundance of colors and subtle drawing, but in several places it frankly frightens with rough 3D. Moreover, the characters of the characters, even the same Sakaki struggling with himself, are not at all worked out. It's good that at least they explained to us why aliens live on a human ship.
Well, the first Godzilla animated trilogy is over. And thank God. Polygon Pictures, of course, left the groundwork for the next film - Mothra's egg, which the natives pray to, but it's hard to believe in the release of another trilogy. Moreover, the studio is currently engaged in another project, the Star Wars Resistance series for Lucasfilm / Disney. Perhaps this is for the best.
And on March 31, 2019, we will have another meeting with Godzilla. Godzilla: King of the Monsters from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. will be released on this day. This is the third installment of the MonsterVerse franchise, launched by Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017). In addition to the title monster, the picture will feature the giant mole Mothra, the giant pteranodon Rodan and King Ghidorah himself, albeit in a more familiar form than in Godzilla: The Planet Eater.
