There is a story of organizing baseball teams by calculating only numerically. Besides, it is a true story. It is the movie <Money Ball>. The'Money Ball' theory, which is also the title of the movie, is a unique club management philosophy that applies the economic principle of getting the most effect at the least cost to baseball. This is an economic principle that Auckland's director Billy Bean actually applied, and the movie <Money Ball> applies this principle to show how he beat the strongest teams one after another with a tight budget, and what kind of repercussions it made in baseball history. It gives a high point that it does not appeal to emotions by leaning on unnecessary newcomers, and because of the nature of sports, the fun to watch is okay. And, personally, what I've been most interested in is the arduous process of Auckland general manager Billy Bean applying the innovative'Moneyball Theory' to real sports.
Fighting internal ills.
“Auckland Athletics”, a club that seldom scores due to the loss of players at the end of the season. Billy Bean, who has risen from the team's player to the general manager, wants to somehow get rid of this stigma. At the end of the season, all the key members of the team,'Islinghausen','Giambi', and'Damon', are taken away. The team needs to be reorganized, but Auckland's club budget can't fill the vacancy of the team aces. The owner is reluctant to support the budget any more. Bean convenes the club's elder executives to overcome this situation. The gray-haired executives are about to recruit new personnel, and the story of performance is second, and the stars such as appearance and personality are considered, and Billy is frustrated with this situation and finally tells them.
“There are a lot of poor clubs in the major leagues, and down there. Our club is at the bottom. If I raised the main players, I took them all out. But now is the time to discuss the players' bodies? Are you going to sell jeans? You have to change your mind.”
To hear the answer coming back to Billy's natural words, the movie has just begun, but it's stupid.
“Hey Billy. We know what the problem is. You believe in our experience and wisdom, and leave it to us to find a replacement for Giambi.”
Billy silently leaves for the stubborn executives. The Yankees are not the target Billy has to fight in <Money Ball>. It's not any strong club, it's an old and inefficient system that's hardened internally. Billy keeps saying "I'll change" something throughout the movie, which is an internal ill of the American Major League.
The Yankees are not the target Billy has to fight in <Money Ball>. It's not any strong club, it's this kind of internally hardened system.
Shortly thereafter, Billy's past is shown. Scout managers watch Billy from a distance and evaluate the characters, but only evaluate things that have nothing to do with baseball skills. In other words, the scout managers are looking at the star, not Billy's talent. They didn't even evaluate their talents, but they come to Billy and talk about their talents and invite Scouts.
After Billy's brief recollections are over, Billy returns to the reality of visiting other clubs to save the player. He came to save Damon's successor, Garcia, but he cannot get Garcia. And the scene of visiting Mark Shaypiro for a trade is what you'll see in this movie in the future, and this scene of trading a player proceeds like an exchange of goods. This is also an internal ill of the American professional baseball league that Billy wants to change, whose many things are determined solely by money.
In other words, he is not looking at Billy's talent, but his star.
Billy comes back after remembering Peter Brand, who whispered Mark Shapiro not to sign Garcia. And through meeting with him, he begins to be interested in opinions based on statistical data and numerical data that Peter studies.
From Billy's point of view, it would not hurt to apply Peter's new theory. Peter formulates Damon's value, and Billy ponders. And on the other hand, reminiscences of childhood come to Billy. Young Billy abandons Stanford University and joins the club at a young age, tricked by the sweet lies of the Scout officials, where the only truth is the possibility of'superstar'. Billy wakes up from daydreaming at the ringing of the phone and asks Peter, who has been calling. Will you scout me? Peter says he will be scouting in ninth place, and Billy hires Peter as vice general.
Finding a new breakthrough
And the next day, at a meeting with the executives of the club again, Mr. Lee presents a breakthrough theory.
Giambi's on-base ratio was 0.477, Damon was 0.324, and Olmedo was 0.291. Total 1.092
Dividing this by three again is 0.364.
In other words, it is an unconventional theory that if the average on-base ratio of the three players who will replace the three ace players' vacant positions is 0.364 or higher, the vacant positions of the existing players can be replaced. Anyway, baseball is a game that leads to scoring by simply on-base anyway. Billy chooses three players only by on-base percentage. Jeremy has a complicated personal life, David Justice, aged 37, and Scott Hattiberg unable to pitch due to injuries. This combination is unconditionally based on the on-base percentage. The vacant positions of the three aces are recruited unconventionally by simply looking at the on-base rate. It is often said to have a cost performance team of their own.
The position of established officials is negative. They again claim that Billy is wrong by proposing their own'experience' and'intuition' , but of course , the intuition that comes from long experience is not negligible. However, it creates synergies when it comes to harmony with the new ones and improves in the better direction, it is not good to rely solely on the old'experience' . Once you say that intuition is'unscientific', you can see how irrational the method is.
It's not just the team's internal and established officials that Billy's team is viewed negatively. Anyone who has received the newly formed Auckland list takes a negative stance. The best evaluation, though, is the evaluation that there was no budget. The evaluation of Hattyberg, who is particularly injured, is very bad. Billy always tries to use Hattiberg at first base, but managers and officials say it's impossible. And the first game played.
It is not good to rely solely on the old'experience'. Once you say'irraditional', you can see how irrational the method is.
Resistance from vested powers.
First baseman is Pena, not Hattyberg. It is the manager's authority to control players outside the stadium, but it is the manager’s authority to control players inside the stadium. Rely on him to put Pena on first base, not Hattyberg.
The game is defeat. After losing the game, Billy visits the coach and asks. Why the hell did you build Pena, not Hattyberg? When asked by Billy, the director comes up with a less convincing answer . He can't, I've been playing baseball for a few years. The coach dismissed all of Billy's opinions, and the Auckland Athletics continued to lose streak. Original close to changing the revolution will sudden, abrupt, anti involve a phase resistance, the resistance experienced by borrowing from <Moneyball> is the older generation and the system seems to never do a formidable resistance by.
Revolution is sudden and rapid, and change close to revolution always entails resistance. Billy's resistance in <Money Ball> is not easy.
Innovate your system at the risk
So, how will you break through this resistance? Billy decides to force the manager to put Hattyberg on first base. You take the risk of overturning the internal system. Just like Pena, who always beat Hattyberg for first baseman, he trades talented player Jeremy Giambi . Now the manager has no choice but to put Hattiberg at first base.
For Billy, it's a lot of risk. Since Pena, the team's ace player, has been sent out, there will be a lot of risk when losing. But Billy doesn't think about the risks, he applies the new method immediately, and with Peter, he gives each player feedback that he calls scientific . Billy needs victory. This is because only performance is the reality that proves the justification of the process.
Game changer
The Athletics now continue to win streaks. And he recruits the first'Ricardo Rincon' he was aiming for. The trade took place as soon as he did not perform in the season, and the Athletics also left Magnante, which was also sluggish. The Athletics continued to record victories and climbed to number one in the West, achieving an unprecedented streak.
Even the clubs with the best players haven't been able to record 9 consecutive wins, but the Athletics continue to win streaks, making a big splash in American baseball history. One commentator, relaying an unprecedented streak, says that "random elements cannot be excluded, too," but that was certainly true. Even in the most accurate statistics, errors exist, and we call them luck or bad luck. I was lucky to come to Athletics first.
One commentator, relaying an unprecedented streak, says that "random elements cannot be excluded, too," but that was certainly true.
Overturning the losing game with Hattiberg's home run, he quickly scored 20 consecutive wins . Hattiberg, who was chosen only by the on-base percentage, creates a miracle as if recreating the glory before injury. No matter how accurate the numbers and calculations were, this victory was a victory that no one expected.
The athletics' record of winning streaks in the movie <Money Ball> stops at 20 consecutive wins. The 20 consecutive wins achieved by the poor club were an achievement worth noting , but the attention of the officials was cold. Even through the first defeat, the athletics' unstable skills are said to have revealed its limits, and even received bad reviews .
On the other hand , someone is interested in Billy's unconventional and innovative way of organizing the club. At the end of the season, Red Sox owner Henry offers Billy a huge salary and demands that he take over as general manager.
No matter how accurate the numbers and calculations were, this victory was a victory that no one expected.
Billy declines the offer and decides to stay with Athletics . What Billy was trying to save by changing the old Marys League system would have been'sportsmanship broken by money' and'life of players'. The unequal fight between the poor and the wealthy. How unfair is the victory and defeat of money?
The movie <Money Ball> was a film that made us think about the problems brought about by the commercialization of the American Major Leagues, and at the same time , it was a film that also had concerns about the innovation of an old and inefficient system . If you are in a position to manage something or have the position of a team leader in your workplace, this is a movie worth referring to. To put it coolly, if you are an employee, you should watch Money Ball as a sports film and a film dealing with social issues in the United States. This is because when you lack strength, it is first to develop your strength.
