Nirvana <Nevermind> (1991)

Youthful scent

The rock band that sold the most records in history! This is the story of Nirvana, a band that is still loved by many rock fans. Formed in Washington in 1987, Nirvana worked as a three-member system of vocalist, guitar, and songwriter Kurt Cobain, bassist Chris Novoselic, and lastly replaced by drummer Dave Groll, who joined Nirvana's heyday. <Nevermind>, released in 1991, is an album containing their representative song, Smells like teen spirit, and it makes a surprise to take first place over Michael Jackson's <Dangerous>, who was beating the Billboard at the time.

The reason their music was so loved is because of the cool vocals and attractive melodies, but also because of the lyrics that contained messages representing the hearts of young people at the time. American Generation X, who felt the severe gap between rich and poor amid neoliberal economic policies, were enthusiastic about their honest lyrics. His anxious soul, derived from his unfortunate childhood, was reflected in their music.

Won't you believe it. It's just my luck.

It's hard to believe, but this is my luck.

No Recess.

There is no break.

Kurt confesses his precarious past with direct lyrics repeated concisely.

I am a stranger

“We avoided the mainstream. One thing you need to remember is that Nirvana was far from the mainstream, but rather the mainstream came to Nirvana.”

-Chris Novoselic at the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dedication

Before their advent, alternative rock has always been treated as a minority in the music scene. Nirvana was the team that brought the public's attention to unfamiliar genres such as punk and grunge in a period when rock bands with maximized commerciality were overflowing, and further brought the underground scene itself to the surface. It is no exaggeration to say that the appearance of Nirvana has shaken the music scene in America itself. As drummer Chris Novoselic said, the mainstream everyone dreams of came first by their side.

They were smart. I never missed the public for a moment. Behind their harsh music was a melody line that people could easily hum in. A simple band composition and a few simple chords, the simple punk spirit, and the popular speech method of easy and direct melody line have to meet and eventually create several masterpieces.

Nirvana-Come As You Are

In a place where there is no discrimination or hate

“Genderists, racists and homophobics don't come to Nirvana.”

Kurt has always been on the side of a minority in society and has been a stranger to himself. He rebelled against all kinds of discrimination and hatred, and rather than to be subdued in alienation and anxiety, he tried to confront and embrace it. It is also melted in Nirvana's music. In the video of In Bloom, he appears in a dress instead of fancy and fancy clothes. I supported the Riot Girl movement, which criticized the male-centered music scene in the 1990s, and also communicated actively with them. Polly and Rape me also took the victim's stand and accused them of terrible sex crimes instead.

But Kurt made an extreme choice at the young age of 27. He was always overwhelmed with fame and refused to be considered a symbol of the mainstream underground. Now Nirvana has stopped in the eternal past, but their music is still a great comfort to those who crave the warmth in a cold society.

Let's see good things together and have fun. To make our an usual day feel unusual.
