Hello Art and Artists Community. Am I glad I found you. This is one of the times that I so want to post something outside of the PhotoChainChallenge. It's about an art form that my wife has recently taken up and I would like to share it with those who are artistically inclined or just love beautiful art. This Community just fits the bill to a tee. So I am writing this post here.
Some of you, hopefully not too many so as not to make this post a bore, may have heard of Diamond Painting. I just heard about this 2 months ago when my wife took this up. What exactly is diamond painting?
Diamond painting is a new art hobby popularized in the US and Europe in 2015. It involves applying hundreds of multi-colored rhinestones on a canvas. Each detail on the canvas is numbered, and you simply have to stick the corresponding pieces of rhinestone to the detail.
Here's a sample of a fresh or unworked canvass.
A close up of the same canvass above shows the numbers or codes in every detail of the painting.
Each number or letter on the canvass corresponds to a particular bead or rhinestone which comes along when you order a canvass.
A plastic stick with a specialized tip to pick up the beads, a wax pad and a green plastic container to place the rhinestones also come along with the order.
It's like cross stitching without the needle and thread. The final results actually look like a completed cross stitched piece but different in the sense that the picture or painting glitters like diamonds. Hence the name Diamond Painting.
Here's a completed canvass my wife did.
And another one.
Enjoying so far? Now what makes the rhinestones stick to the canvass? Diamond painting canvasses are made using two different types of adhesive. Some companies use double-sided tape, while others use poured glue on the canvasses. Both are transparent, but it seems there is a general consensus that the best brands are those that use poured glue. For the ones my wife ordered, they are poured glue.
And just like any other painting, this should be framed and hanged to adorn the walls of the house or office or establishment. The rhinestones are not guaranteed to stick forever so some may come off over time. When it happens some facelifting or repairs would have to be done. But for as long as the canvass is not displayed where it is exposed directly to sunlight, the painting would last for quite a while.
My wife is a religious person so the canvasses she ordered are of this nature. But there are thousands of designs that can be ordered that will suit one's preference.
Why do Diamond Painting?
Basically, it is a hobby that can take one's mind away from the worries and hassles of everyday life. It de-stresses and creates peace of mind and a healthy mental attitude towards problems and hardship. It is also a wonderful gift idea to someone special. My wife plans to frame her finished paintings soon. Perhaps when she does I can make a follow up post about it.
Where to order? My wife orders on line with an outfit called Shopee. They usually deliver within 2 to 3 days right at our doorstep. In other countries perhaps Amazon or Ali Baba may be a good source.
Are you ready to start your first Diamond Painting?

Same here. I should have guessed I'd find you here with your sketchbook and all. You're an artist 🎨
I'll post the framed canvass and tag you in on it 😊

Not quite there yet, but it's a fun activity! 😁 You might want to give scribbling a try—I have a feeling it could be your niche. 😎 I'll mention you in the next lesson😁
Looking forward for the framed canvass😉

It reminds me of mosaic but it's ver tiny at least that is how it looks to me. It's true it's sold "everywhere" with us. The shop Action has them too and they are one of the cheapest places to buy all sort of stuffs especially if it comes to art (pencils, paper, sketchbooks, clay and paint I buy over there). I never tried it although once in a while I think "that looks nice should I give it a try?". What stops me is those tin pieces and the fact it's dark inside so I will have a hard time to see what I do, also if I want to keep it at one place without the need to clean it up.
I wonder how big the diamond painting is your wife works on and how long it takes to finish one. Her eyes never heard?
I don't have many wall so hang (tiny house and a few months ago I bought a sofa after 12 years without which fills the entire room (the room is small the sofa isn't that big) .
Who knows I try one day though I wonder if one can paint his own idea instead of a bought one which reminds of my childhood where we had something similar but used paint (very expensive).
What I like is the fact that you write it takes the mind of the business one daily deals with. A nice way to relax and create at the same time without the stress of a artist's block(age).
Thanks for sharing a DIY about a modern type of art.

The painting is 30cm x 40cm and takes my wife about 6 to 8 hours non stop to complete. Her eyes do not hurt as she uses a table lamp with a high wattage bulb. It's her neck that bothers her after having to look down on the painting for hours. But that doesn't stop her though. She's used to cross stitching and has done some really big ones which were twice the size of the diamond painting canvass.
The online shop she buys from doesn't have canvasses that are not coded. But I am sure there are specialized shops that offer these but I doubt there are here in the Philippines.
My wife says it is so easy to do, relaxing and quite fulfilling, especially once the canvass is completed. Though I think the one using paint that you mentioned in your childhood days would be more challenging and thus more satisfying.
Thank you for your comments. I appreciate them very much 😊

The pain in the neck I recognize. All together it's not as long as I thought. I can imagine the fullfilment and joy it brings plus the me-time. Good for you she always comes out that room happier.
Do you still have walls left? You & the family can have an exhibition with all your art and crafts 😁
(yes, you can add your photochain shots)
🍀♥️

Now that you asked the answer is actually, yes. Most of the art my daughter does are sold so there's not much to hang. My wife's cross-stitch frames, and now her diamond paintings, she usually gives them away as presents. Again, not much to hang there. My PhotoChain pictures are all stored in my phone so nothing to hang there. So what's left to hang are the ones that haven't yet been given away. Like this most recent Diamond Painting my wife finished and framed. I think the neck pain and eye strain were worth all the effort
This I think has a designated recipient already. So this one's going down soon to receive the upcoming one below.
No recipient for this yet.
Nah, only Jazz's art would pass as exhibit worthy. Maybe my wife's Diamond Painting could be considered but that in itself is not art but merely following instructions of the artist who did the canvass coding. For all we know it could even be computer generated. Nice thought but no can do.
Thanks for your support and that of steemcurator05's. You guys sure know how to make someone's day 😃🥰

Nice to see you here! I've been exposed to this kind of art before. My grandmother has such paintings in her house. If I remember correctly she got them from her friend. Your wife made beautiful works. I can't imagine how much patience it takes to create something like this. These elements are so tiny!

Your grandmother had them? How long does this exist? I can only remember mosaic with glass or parts of broken tiles.

Yes, she has them. I won't say exactly how old they are. Maybe around 10 years old.

Nice to see you here too. This is my first time here and hopefully, not the last. Wow. I would really like to see those paintings that your grandma has. They must be very beautiful.
My wife hangs a "DoNot Disturb" sign when she's doing this 😀 Yes, patience and good eyesight 😊

Patience and good eyesight and the "don't disturb" sign. I should have a sign like that.

Yes, artist at work. You definitely need a sign like that. Throw in a good lamp with a high watt bulb to help you see the tiny pieces. Voila. You're set! 😊

Two things I don't have: light and privacy.

Funny how things some people can take for granted, such as these two, can be what others find hard to acquire. I am so used to having light, space and privacy where I am now that I always think everyone has these as well. So sorry to hear your lack of space and light. I just hope you have learned to cope with such conditions, as it seems you have, and make the best out of them. Know that these are only temporary and somehow, sometime they can get better. 😊

Greetings friend,
Thank you for presenting us with this proposal of:
"rhinestone, mosaic, pointillism in 3D," an interesting activity and I think the shine of the diamond tiles makes them look very beautiful.
I remember a similar hobby that I practiced as a child which was filling in the numbered spaces of a piece of art with paints, I worked with oil and acrylic paint.
You make an interesting review of the activity that, as you say, encourages creativity, I would add "patience" and a lot of dedication to such meticulous work.
The ending seemed funny to me, because of its resemblance to a sales commercial. I don't know if that was your intention.
I also wonder if all the canvases come already numbered or if there is the option of doing it intuitively without the factory guides from the seller.

So this must be the technical term for it. Sounds very scholarly. It really is a very interesting activity and I really was impressed by the finished painting, all glittery and shiny.
This hobby of yours when you were young sounds just like this Diamond Painting. Were you able to save some of your canvasses? They must have looked like the paintings of the old masters.
Yes, patience is the number one necessity. Second is a good eyesight. Third would be dedication. But mostly, patience. My wife sometimes goes 2 to 3 hours a day working on the painting. But despite the long hours she's always happier after each session.
I did not intend any commercial spiel in the post. I just thought some readers, especially from my country, might wonder where they can procure such canvasses. I just mentioned, I hope casually, where my wife buys hers.
My wife thinks all canvasses come with the numbered pattern. There were none that did not have the guide. But, I guess, as an artist, you would find this even more challenging if there were any available.
Thanks for the welcome. Happy to read your comment. See you again 😊

Did you figure it out? Do you have something in mind? You could also ignore what it printed on the canvas.

No. My wife, who is the one doing the diamond painting, says she'd rather stick to the numbered canvass at the moment. She knows it is more challenging to do the unnumbered but unfortunately she does not have the luxury of time and skill for such. So I did not look into it anymore. But thanks for the link you provided because I can give them to anyone who could be interested.

LIke you I also had the painting with numbers but not for long, it was kind of boring to stay between the lines. I never liked colouring either.
We seem to ask the same question.. I am sure the stones can be ordered, I assume the glue as well.. the rest is? Perhaps wood, a t-shirt, a wall? But it is tiny work, a lot of patience
