Elon Musk is more or less, the Anthony Edward Stark of our reality. He is built to invent as we have seen, putting all his life into one invention and innovations or the other. For instance, from Starlink, to Electrical Vehicles, Hyperloop, Neuralink, and Space-X, to mention a few. They are all meant to innovate or invent one thing or the other. For me, I believe Elon is working on what his mind can envision, so if his mind can envision Mars, then so be it. Moreover, every invention and innovation was first birthed in the mind.
