What was the first vegetable you cultivated? How did you cultivate it?

First vegetable cultivated?

The first vegetable I ever grew was pineapple and plantain . In pineapple , I start by choosing good varieties because this determines the yield. And the variety I choose was queen pineapple. This variety is rare in my state and country in general. Why I choose this variety is that they are more tolerant to diseases and cold temperatures than other pineapple.

And also when fruiting, they have dark yellow with a small core. And it also have a pleasant aroma and flavor.
I had to order it across the country.
This pineapple 🍍 is mostly found in Australia and South Africa. You can see the beauty of this very species. Unlike others.

Plantain is common in my state and area and we have good variety. It's planted by sucker. Though many people do not key into it because it takes time before maturity.
And also required maintenance.

How did you cultivate it?

As soon as the suckers arrived, I leaves the root of the suckers to dry for another one week so the germinating root can start coming out.
After treating and stabilizing the soil, I plant the sucker in a sunny and well drainage soil about 3 inches deep and 7cm away the the other. Pineapple can tolerate drought so it doesn't need much watering. I have to weed at least 5 times a year before fruiting.
Though the duration is 12-15 months after planting and the fruiting takes 15-28 months after planting depending on the variety and time of planting. Because I planted mine in a correct duration, it's always due for harvest during may- August.
I also decided on planting cover crops in the spacing which are melons to reduce weed.
You can see how long my pineapple 🍍 takes before harvest. It requires patience and hard work.

In plantain, Plantain takes over 8 months before the bunches start coming out. Also depending on the variety. I usually sell it per stand. One plantain bunch is four thousand depending on the size that is about 16 STEEM. I enjoy all this process.

Did you grow those vegetables for home consumption or for sale? How much money did you make for the sell?

The purpose of cultivating this plant is to sale them and make money πŸ’°
So I specifically grew it for sale. i.e commercially not subsistence.

How much money did you make for the sell?

Well, depending on the size and the produces.
For pineapple 🍍 1 pineapple 🍍 cause one thousand five hundred depending on the size. i.e 6 STEEM

Which one plantain bunch cause four thousand depending on the size too which is 16 STEEM.
Adding together the fertilizer, exporting and labours will determine my profit (gain)
Selling all this things do not only gives me money πŸ’° but also connect my with other people across my community, state and country. And I enjoy doing all this things.

Explain how you feel about vegetables farming?

It gives me great satisfaction
Right off the top of my head I can’t think of any other endeavor that gives the same amount of satisfaction as this. knowing that shortly much of this will end up on our table or the tables of friends and families. And that’s just the joy I felt.

Write about fertilizer management for vegetables.

Alot of my fertilizer comes from farmyard and poultry waste (poultry dung). This makes my plant rich and produce good yield also free from diseases and harmful substance.before planting, I compose the soil, and sprayed the manure round the soil. This gives me better yield and satisfaction. I only applied inorganic fertilizer when ever I noticed that my crops are not doing well.
Fertilizer like urea i.e ; M.P.K 15;15,15.
Applying them on any plant that is not doing well.
These gives me great satisfaction.
