SEC - S15W5 : WHICH ONE IS BETTER?

Choices!

For the last 45 weeks, I’ve been hosting a contest about choices in the Steem For Ladies Community. Steemians must choose one word from five and then write a post of 550+ words about it.

Each week, I wonder how those who have entered get to choose which word they want to write about, as each week I want to write about all of them.

As it is, it is difficult to choose between two good things, let alone five. Although all five could work for me, the most important is that the sense of contention should not be in our hearts but our minds. We should know that our choices are the best for us when taken, and whatever we did not choose was not meant to be.

This my dear friends, is how I will answer these questions today… with my mind and not my heart.

Employee or Entrepreneur

We are not all the same. Just imagine how boring life would have been if we were the same. Anyhow, some of us are workers, and others are born leaders.

If you are a born worker, you will be a brilliant employee.

My sister falls into this category. She is a born worker, and with that, she is also a born-pleaser. She is the best employee that you can ask for. How do I know? She worked for me, and I was lucky that she did.

She is one of those who ticks the following boxes;

Well organized and neat ✔
Disciplined ✔
Excellent written and verbal communication skills ✔
Bilingual ✔
Loyal and honest ✔
A team player ✔

She was happy to have an eight-to-five job, which allowed her time to be with her children. What she liked most, as a single mother, was that she could budget according to her salary.

I share five advantages and challenges that the position of an employee had for my sister.

AdvantagesChallenges
She had a set salaryThe chance of improving her position and salary
She received employee benefitsWhat if the business get sold?
She received paid time offWhat if she fall pregnant?
She had set working hoursTo widen her horizon
She had set duties and responsibilitiesPerformance measurements (KPIs)

I'm sharing some of the answers she gave when I conducted a performance appraisal with her way back in 2014.

image.png

Question: Has the past year been good/bad/satisfactory or otherwise for you, and why?

Answer: The past year has been good, as I think all departments worked hard as a team together, which made working much easier.

Question: What elements of your job interest you the most, and least?

Answer: The element that interests me the most is to see that support stays on par with their service and training and my weekly feedback at the staff meeting.

Question: What action could be taken to improve your performance in your current position by you, and your senior?

Answer: I am sure a salary raise will be very welcome. :-) Otherwise, I am definitely focused and am sure that I can improve by myself and do not need any actions to be taken.

Question: What kind of work or job would you like to be doing in one/two/five years?

Answer: I like what I’m doing but would like to also take part in training and client liaison.

I think you will agree with me that this is just the perfect employee you want in your business. Someone who is happy with what they are doing and who will give everything to do it to their best.

If you are a born leader and you are motivated, you will be a brilliant entrepreneur.

Being an entrepreneur takes guts!

I have found over the years that very few people believe that they can do it, and therefore they choose not to be entrepreneurs.
Myles Monroe, who was an evangelist from the Bahamas, once told us that the richest place on earth is the graveyard, as so many ideas and opportunities are buried there.

I’ve been an entrepreneur for most of my life.

What are the boxes that I would like to say I tick?

I show good leadership ✔
I am motivated ✔
I am willing to take the risk and to fail ✔
I don’t easily give in ✔
I lack not perseverance nor determination ✔
I am a sucker for punishment ✔

I’ve never regretted being an entrepreneur. I might work ten times harder than any of those who worked for me, but I’ve always been blessed with great rewards.

It is time for me to share five advantages and challenges that I have found as an entrepreneur.

AdvantagesChallenges
You are your own bossNot to stress and let the staff notice
You work when you wantKnowing at all times what is happening in your business
Your earnings can be higherEnough for you after everyone else has been paid
You make the final decisionMaking the right decisions
You are following your dreamBeing one step ahead of your competitors

I am sure that by now you know what my answer is to the question: which one is the better one, employee or entrepreneur?

I will choose entrepreneur above being an employee 101 time!

Saving or investing

When you have to choose between saving and investing, there is only one question that you have to answer, and that is… What is your goal?

I think it is important that we look at the meaning of each one before we answer the question.

Saving

• The bad thing about saving is that, in the long run, you are not going to beat things like inflation if you only save.

• The good thing about savings is that you always have “cash on hand," as I call it. It is relatively easy to draw the money. Plus, there is hardly any risk involved.

• Savings are for those short-term goals, like saving for a holiday or that family car.

Investing

Investing is when you earn an amount on your returns, and there are various options for you to choose from.

• The good thing about investments is that they can help you with nasty things like the inflation I've mentioned just now.

• The bad thing with investment is that it can take a long time for you to withdraw some of it, plus investing comes with a risk; therefore, it is important to choose the right kind of investment.

• Investment is for those long-term goals like education and, later on, your retirement.

Now which one is the better one, savings or investing?

When I started my first job, I chose the saving option. I had to save for that car that I saw advertised in our local CAR magazine, a Nissan EXA. I just had to buy it, and I had to buy it in cash. They were not yet available in South Africa when I ordered one from the local car dealer.

I was the 10th person in South Africa to drive one. I can remember the day so clearly when I had to go and fetch it. I went to the dealer with my dad, but in the end, I didn’t want to drive it home. I let my dad drive it home, and I took the motorcycle.
I must admit that in the end, when I sold it, it also turned out to be an investment, as I sold it for nearly double what I'd paid for it.

Later in the years, I discovered that savings are not what is going to look after me when I retire. Investment was the answer.

Let’s compare saving 10 dollars a day over 35 years and investing 10 dollars over the same period and see what the outcome would be.

Now it is up to you to check if the calculations are right.

I choose savings, but the best solution is to save to invest!

Steemit or Hive

No matter what you do in life, there will always be competition. This is the same with business.

I remember when I bought my first restaurant. There were 5 food outlets in town: a hotel, a roadhouse, two restaurants, and one takeaway. The day I sold my restaurant, there were 16 different food outlets. Best of all, the cake was exactly the same size although the defense force base was now semi-closed down but on the other hand the university was bigger.
What was different was that the slices of cake was so much smaller.

Why was the restaurant successful? I made an effort to stay ahead of my competitors.

It is the same with Steemit and Hive. Hive is the competitor, and Steemit just has to do anything in its power to stay ahead. This goes as far as uniqueness, the ability to collaborate with communities, growth in earning potential, and, for sure, the assurance of sustainability.

I know Steemit, but I don’t know Hive. I cannot compare the two.

Yes, I have been on Hive. When you are an admin, moderator, or curator, you just cannot stay away from Hive. This is if you do your job properly when it comes to plagiarism checking.

Yes, I have seen Steemian accounts on Hive.

Yes, I have seen duplicate posts and images.

Yes, I have seen posts where the word “Steemit” was just replaced with “Hive.” The funny thing is that for the same post on Steemit, the user received 50 times, if not more, earnings than on Hive.

No, I have never looked at the functionality of Hive.

No, I have no intention of opening an account on Hive. Steemit is my home, and I might sound old-school, but I am not a social media boffin, and I have no intention of becoming one. I like a set standard of routine, and I have found mine.

Now, if you want me cross all you have to do is change my display settings on my home screen. This is how I feel about Steemit.

I chose Steemit without even looking into Hive.

My dear friends, this brings me to the end of my post.

It is your choice, but remember one thing... the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Thank you for the verification ☕

The first point: there are no words of regret when we have enjoyed the result.

The second point: actually saving is an investment, the difference is in the way we put that value.

Third Point: No one doubts your commitment in Steemit, I bet you will not choose Hive, when you are quite famous on this Platform.

This a very enjoyable post to read, success is always for you Mrs. @patjewell

Haha! You are such a clever guy!

Third point ... and another ✔

Thank you for the visit and the engagement. It is always nice to read your commentary. ☕

I learned a lot from you, Mrs. patjewell
Best role model.

Awh! Thank you for the kind words. ☕

Hi @patjewell, as always, it is my immense pleasure to stop and read your post. I don't do it very often, but every time I do, I enjoy it.

I am like your sister, all my life I was an employee, and currently I am retired, but unfortunately inflation and the bad economic situation of the country, does not allow me for now to enjoy what I had dreamed of.

At this point I think that I should have been an entrepreneur when I had the opportunity and, for fear, I did not take the step.

I love that you are a successful woman, and that your choice is right with Steemit.

Greetings and continued success in your life.

Thank you! Not only for the visit and the support, but for your kind words.
For many people, taking that first step to become entrepreneurs is not easy. Then again, I do believe that things happen for a reason. You might have had your own business, but just imagine what you would have gone through during COVID.
Millions of businesses closed down during this period. People committed suicide because they could not provide for their families.

Be assured, my friend, that at the time you made the right decision.🎕

Your writeup is super, are we steemians and I think we will all choose steemit over hive, of course all you mentioned about steemit is true. Steemit is a good place to be.

We should start a new hashtag, #ilovesteemit (•ิ‿•ิ)

Thank you for the visit to my post and the engagement.
It is appreciated! 🎕

It's interesting to read about your perspective on choice making. The comparison, advantages and challenges of each option you provided makes it easier to understand. Good choice of selection and of course excellent publication! Good luck in the contest!

Thank you!
It is always nice to read good commentary on your post.

I must admit that when it comes to business and politics, I can often get so excited that I forget not to make my post complicated. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Hi mother.. I honestly read your post twice,, it looks like a lesson I learned in school. Even I am confused about where to give a comment from.,, 😇

To me you are a teacher, you deserve to be respected. And you are a mother for all Steemians, it is fair to say that Steemit is the most comfortable home.

I just want to ask "Whether Is the neighbor's grass still green during the dry season?, haha

A lot of people talk about "HIVE", but I say "Steemit is my first love, how could I look away?"

Success is always for you my mother ☕

Hahaha!
Thank you for making me smile. (•ิ‿•ิ)
It is true, the grass is NOT always green, not even in winter.

With pleasure..
I am more interested in taking care of the grass in my own garden, and making a high fence so that I am not tempted by the neighbor's grass. 😅

Healthy is always my mother ☕

It is another long run reading after the article from wakeupkitty.pal, @patjewell, but what you write is from your very own thought and not only for the challenge purpose just like hers. I am still in the middle of something that need my focus. I will come back and read it again and perhaps I will participate in the contest myself

Have a nice day as always. Oh..hey I noticed you leaved a comment of my post wich is not really a post of diary game but a satire for those who can understand the recent situation in my country. I will be back later my friend

best regard

Awh thank you!!! Just know that you've put a smile on my face with your comment.
I was a bit "hot under the collar" from wakeupkitty.pal post.
But yah.

As for the post you are referring to, I understand it too well. I read a number of posts and comments from Indonesia about the elections of the 14th and the stand of the government.
It seems that it doesn't matter where you go in the world, it is the same old story everywhere.

Enjoy what you are busy with, and remember to have fun this week.
PS: If you meet up with my 2 friends please share the coffee with them ☕ ☕ ☕

Am super impressed with your publication for putting your words and point in a perfect way. However, this is the statement that makes me more excited.

No, I have no intention of opening an account on Hive. Steemit is my home, and I might sound old-school, but I am not a social media boffin, and I have no intention of becoming one.

Steemit is the best place to be, just as you have said, a business that doesn't have a competitor isn't yet a business which means for a business to stand firm such a business will have to first overcome it competitor. I like how dedicated you are here. Good luck to you.

It is for me to say thank you for the visit and the engagement, not to mention the kind words.

Steemit vs Hive

I know too little about Hive to say anything but I do know a lot about Steemit, maybe not about the "mechanics" but the operation and it will take a lot to change my mind about Steemit.

Oh yes, the two of us will be supporting each other for many moons to come! 🤛
