Hello, friends of CampusConnect 🥰

Great to be here again. Trust we are all good? In this engagement contest, I will be sharing with you my side hustle on the campus as a student.

As we all know, side hustle is a separate work you do besides your main work, in order to make additional income. Side hustle can be any work you do to augment the earnings you receive from your major job.

Most salary workers have side hustles they do in order to meet their financial demands, which their main job cannot sufficiently cover.

Students on campus are no different. We get our main support from our parents but we still have other financial needs to be met in school. Hence the strong need for a side hustle.

What is your side hustle

As a student on campus, I currently have 2 things I do as a side hustle.

One, I make cakes and pastries on order. I was already into baking before I got admission into the university. Besides, baking is one of my favourite hobbies. I get orders for cakes such as birthday cakes, , cup cakes, graduation cakes , valentine cakes, wedding cakes , etc.

some of my cakes

Students love cakes a lot . I get loads of preorders for cupcakes and birthday cakes, and especially val cakes during the Valentine season.😀. I do special combo packages too. But at the moment, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria have been on strike for 6 months. Students have been staying at home.

Baking is an hobby for me that puts money in my pockets on campus.

Second , I develop business networks for Century 21 Freedom Group International.

As part of my job description, I show individuals alternative ways to access capital to start a business, fund an existing business or projects without dropping collaterals and without taking loans. We run mentorship programs under the Economy Designer 3.0 Project and the Amazon Project.

online/physical business events

I work from the campus most times, only on some weekends, I go to the office.

This is another way I earn.

How do you merge both side hustle and education on campus

I must say that working alongside schooling is not an easy task but a necessary one to support yourself financially.

One thing that helps me is proper planning and maximizing of time. I am a nursing student in the university of Lagos.

Nursing is already a demanding course. We spend hours receiving lectures and we go for clinical postings days where we go to the ward. It can be that tedious. Before the end of the day, you are already tired and stressed.

But I didn't take my stressful course as an excuse not to run side hustles. Whenever I have cake orders, I immediately plan my baking activities: the day for materials purchasing, day to cream with a mixer, the day to bake, next day to frost and design, and the cake should be ready at least a day before delivery, except for urgent orders. Each of the activity is done after lecture hours. Lectures end 4pm most days except Fridays by 1pm.

For my business networks developing, I run that too after lecture hours and mostly on weekends. When I have cake orders, I engage minimally in my other business.

I make sure I manage my time properly. I hardly have time to waste gisting around. When I am not working, I am studying. I ensure I complete my assignments and study well because I don't want my side hustles to affect my grades at all.
Therefore, I only do my side hustles after school hours and on weekends without having effect on my studies.

How many hours to do you work a week on your side hustle

For baking , it is on preorders most times. And I make cakes only when a customer place the order. So it's not every week that I bake. Some weeks, I have a lot of orders , such that I do batch baking and some, few orders.

Besides I split the baking activities into days such that it is easy, quick and stress-free. And I can still do some school work like assignment, presentation, reports that day.

For my business networks developing, I spend averagely 18 hours every week when I don't have large bakings.

Side hustles is important to students on campus. With the earnings whether small or big, we can keep body and soul together on campus. We wouldn't have to be waiting on our parents support or get stranded because of money. We would have something to hold on to. Besides, side hustles in a way ease some financial burdens off parents.
