I would like to educate us on calculating GPA and CGPA.... It is so unfortunate That Most Student Don't have an idea on how to calculate their CGPA/GPA.... Well I was once a victim 3 years in the University without a clue on how to calculate my grades, but luckily for me I attended an orientation and got to know how to calculate my CGPA and my GPA.

First of all let's know the difference between CGPA and GPA..

CGPA : Means Cumulative Grade Point Average. This is the total of 1st and 2nd semester, In summation and Division, amounting to it.

GPA - Means Grade Point Average : This is Your total grade after every semester

C.U - Credit Units
TCU - Total Credit Unit

G.P - Grade Point
TGP or TQP - Total Grade Point or Quality Point

Thus;
GPA ..... This is derived by dividing the Total Grade/Quality point (TQP/TGP) by the Total Credit unit (TCU) for that semester.

Below are some things you need to know

5 = A
4 = B
3 = C
2 = D
1 = E
0 = F

  1. 70-100 = A
  2. 60-69 = B
  3. 50-59 = C
  4. 45-49 = D
  5. 40-44 = E
  6. 0-39 = F

HOW TO CALCULATE CGPA

√ Let's Consider a 1st Semester Result as shown below;

S/n           Unit       G.P
  1.   3    × (A) 5     =  15

  2.   2    × (B) 4    =  8

  3.   2    × (A) 5     = 10

  4.  3     × (A) 5     = 15

  5.  3     × (C) 3     = 9

  6.  3     × (D) 2      = 6

  7.  2     × (E) 1.     = 2

    TCU. TGP
    =18 = 65

That is:
GPA = TGP/TCU
= 65/18
= 3.61

√√ Let us now consider 2nd Semester Result.
Note: We'd carry out same procedure in 1st semester then apply here.
But let's assume our TCU & TGP to be = 20 and = 93 respectively.

GPA for second semester GPA = TGP/TCU
93/20
= 4.65

You'll add first semester and semester together to get CGPA. AS As shown below;

CGPA = TGP+TGP(1st & 2nd semester) / TCU+TCU(1st & 2nd Semester)

CGPA = 65+94/ 18+20
= 159 / 38
= 4.184210
Note: Always approximate your point to 2decimal places.
Therefore: Your main
CGPA = 4.18

Know where You Belong

  1. 4.50 - 5.00 = First Class

  2. 3.50 - 4.49 = 2nd Class Upper

  3. 2.40 - 3.49 = 2nd Class Lower

  4. 1.50 - 2.39 = 3rd Class

  5. 1.0 - 1.49 = Pass
