In the process of growing up we absorb a lot of information and we are faced with new new surroundings, situations, and individuals. One of these experiences create an impression on us that changes how we think and act, that is why our personalities are derived from our experiences of life.

What Is a Temperament

Someone's temperament is formed as a child and never changes. It just grows over time. It has been said that temperament is constant and serves as medium to help you know how you will be able to reacts and handle situations. It's a way to know your personality traits consistently.

Studies has shown that is determined by brain-stem process. Everyone has a brain stem that is unique and cannot be change over the course of their life. As we continue I will be giving more information on the various types of temperaments.

Four Types of Temperament

There are four types of temperament discovered by Psychologists, known as humor in distant. It was believed that certain people's behavior was caused by humor. It is quite possible that an individual can posses more than one (1) temperament. The types of temperament are discussed below.

  • Sanguine
These type of temperament is the most common type of temperament. It can be either a primary type or secondary type of temperament, but not everyone is sanguine. Sanguine is likely to be found in men also in women. Some people are said to be so overly talkative and active ("super sanguine") that is to say it can be fun staying around them.

Characteristics of Sanguine

People with sanguine temperament are extremely oriented people. They are easy going, sociable and talkative. They always advice and motivate people to work together and do good things in common for each other.

People with sanguine temperament are emotional, and a wide range of behavior. They are involved all most in every activities and are versatile of all the temperaments due to their secondary temperament. They enjoy occasions where by they can interact with people or change their environment. They are slow to make decisions, and are not ambitious, they resist change. They may need a bit of time and patience to adapt to change.

  • Phlegmatic
This is a very common temperaments, but are almost opposite of sanguine temperaments. It is quite possible to be vice versa, either to be primary type of sanguine and a secondary type of phlegmatic.

People with the phlegmatic temperament type are introverted and service oriented, but will sometimes work together with others to achieve a goal. They are submissive, which leads to a lack of ambition, even when working with others.

Phlegmatic Characteristics

These temperament, are easy going, calm, and unemotional. They are undecided and agreeable, and are usually not happy to allow others make decisions for them.

Phlegmatic temperament people are very easy people to get along with because they are patient and so agreeable. They are slow to warm up to others but will make friends very easily and they also stick closely to their routines and resist change.

People with these temperament tend to live quiet lives centered around home and family. They don't associate with the world around them or with other people. They are fiercely loyal to their friends and always stick to a relationship no matter what the other person does or says. However, once they breakup in a relationship, they are not likely to return to it.

  • Melancholy
Whenever the word melancholy is mentioned what comes in the mind of people is depression. But melancholy is not necessarily depression so much as they are cautious. Also it is quite a common temperament found in both parties.

People with this temperament are very detailed and quality oriented. They are always kin to find what is right rather than being right all the time. They also make sure to work people's work and make sure all details are as perfect as possible. They always love to perfect in what they do in general.

Characteristics of Melancholy

People with this temperament are rules follower. They can be can be very careful and tentative in unfamiliar environments. They are private and introverted and can be very aggressive when they are faced with situation that are not favourable. Melancholy temperament is factual, logical, and analytical. People with these temperament need to have a solid plan for action to function without anxiety.

These temperament are usually anxious and they worry about the future and what others think. They hardly live in the present and worry about how things might have been done in the past. They are well organized, they always come on time for appointments and expect others to do the same.

They gather many information and ask questions before they decisions. They are very suspicious and are slow to trust others until they clear their doubts. They really jump into relationships, and have standards for their relationship whenever they want a relationship.

  • Choleric
These temperament is the rarest of the four types of temperament. Especially, females with this temperament as their primary temperament are extremely rare. It is quite common for choleric to be a secondary temperament, but not as common as the other temperament.

People with these temperament are results oriented. They make plans and goals and stick to them. They are always pushing hard to succeed and always stay positive with constant forward movement. They have the mindset of getting results whenever they are faced with opposition or situations.

Characteristics of Choleric

They are extrovert and exude self-confidence and are independent and strong willed. They are generally active and practical in what they do and have quick minds. The way they communicate is assertive and direct, they are often brief almost to the point of rudeness.

They love taking risks and gets bored easily, they can be domineering and opinionated often and they find it easy to make decisions, for themselves and for others as well. They can be controlling in relationships. They also tend to sleep less than other temperament types. People with these temperament are creative and never seem to run out of ideas or plans. They don't easily give in to peer pressure and are steadfast in their ideas.

They likely have few close friends and can be compassionate and they are slow to build relationships. They are not afraid to meet and talk to new people and don't tend to empathize with others. They don't get angry easily, However, their way of speaking can be domineering and direct and can be misconstrued as anger.

This is a type of temperament that is content to let things happen. They are very slow to make decisions, and they are not ambitious. However, they resist change. They need quite a number of time and patience to adapt to change, especially if it is sudden.

How To Manage Different Temperaments

The different temperament types don't always merge well. In a situation where two people of different temperaments may have difficulties in relationships. Temperament don't change that easily, what you guys need to do is to learn to understand each other and learn ways to cope with each other's needs.

CONCLUSION

The way you perceive and handle the world around you has a direct impact on how you interact with it. Have more knowledge concerning your temperament, you can create more awareness around this personality and what it means for you in your life daily. Creating awareness is the first step in cultivating change.

Try putting on a Positive Outlook on Life. You find out you have a temperament that makes you lean more on the negative or prevents you from taking chances, you try to develop a more positive outlook on life. When you are positive it gives you the power to thrive without fear holding you back from fully enjoying the world.
