Good evening everyone. Hope you all are doing great. Today I'll be talking on a really interesting thing called Self Concept. Please read through. You will surely get something out of it.
It wasn't until last week that I began to know about self concept. Come to think of it, I hadn't even heard of it until I started reading a book- The Psychology of Selling by Brian Tracy. Although the book is mostly about being an outstanding salesperson, it talks a lot about self concept and how it affects everything that we can control.
What is Self Concept?
Self Concept is the general image we have for ourselves. It is our very own perception of ourselves and how we relate with the environment.
Ultimately, a positive overall self concept means you see yourself as a good person while a negative self means otherwise.
How does Self Concept affect students?
This might be the next question on your mind. The thing is, self concept affects everyone in every area of life, including academics. The book I stated above talks about how it affects you as a salesperson. To further illustrate the effects of self concept on students, I need to first lay down the three components of self concept:
Self image: Self image is how you see yourself in the present. It is your "now perception" of yourself, whether it be physical traits, social traits, etc.
Ideal self: This is how you see yourself to be in the future. It is your "future perception" of yourself.
Self esteem: Self esteem is your personal opinion on your worth and your abilities.
Ultimately, a negative self image can make you doubt if your ideal self can really exist, therefore affecting your self esteem negatively.
As a student, if you have a dream to be at the top in the future, but constantly allow your present situations to discourage you from striving, your self esteem will suffer. In essence, your dreams will not be a reality.
How to Improve your Self Concept as a Student:
Use positive self talk: Telling yourself that you are the best increases your self image which will in turn, improve your overall self concept. Once you control your inner voice to only speak good about yourself, you will see yourself feeling motivated to achieve your ideal image.
Be good to others: One thing is this, if you are a horrible person, you will surely see yourself as a horrible person once in a while (that is, unless you have a serious problem). In being good to others, you will, in essence, be good to yourself. Do not mistake being good with being gullible. You should know when people are trying to exploit you.
Sleep well: Sleeping well takes away a lot of things on your mind, even a negative self concept.
Get some exercise: Regular exercise releases happy hormones in your system which helps your self concept.
Improve on what you are already good at: Trying new things is alright, but do not forget that there is that special thing that you were naturally wired to do very well. When you improve on that area, you will begin to see your worth on a more positive level.
As a student, you need to have a positive overall perception of yourself if you are going to succeed academically and be okay socially. A negative self concept can cause a lot. You can fall sick, you'll constantly focus on your flaws, you'll believe everything is against you and eventually, it could lead to suicide.
Remember, a strong, positive self-image is the best possible preparation for success- Joyce Brothers.
Goodnight.
