Plantains are part of the food that we cook and eat for consumption. They are less sweet, starchier equivalent to bananas. It is referred to as cooking or green bananas that may be eaten ripe or unripe.
Unripe plantain aren't something appealing to many because some person's don't like eating it not knowing what it gives to the body. However, Nutritionists researchers believe that unripe plantains are better for your health than ripe ones as you get older. Unripe plantains are easily digestible, rich, and very nutritious as they contain complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
Unripe plantains have numerous health benefits. They are used to manage diabetes. They are rich in iron and potassium, vitamin A and B, magnesium and phosphorus. They have a hypoglycemic effect or help control blood level sugar. That is the fibre in plantains could help your blood sugar levels to stay steady longer.
Also, unripe plantains helps in digestion and also help prevent constipation by promoting bowel regularity due to the fibre in them. They contain a good amount of Vitamin C, which always act as an antioxidant that helps in boosting your immune system.
Antioxidants protect your body against free radical damages that is associated with aging, heart diseases, and even some types of cancer. However, unripe plantains are very rich in calcium, and they are the most essential mineral needed for our stronger bones, muscles, nails and teeth. They can also help prevent ulcers.
Studies have shown that unripe plantains can both prevent the formation of ulcers and help to heal them.
Unripe plantains do also ease menstrual discomfort and boost fertility. They can be eaten boiled, roasted, fried in slices, turned into flour, or cooked as porridge. They can be cooked or be prepared with vegetables, honey, ginger, garlic, dry fish, periwinkle, and other food recipes to make it look attractive and delicious.
However, ensure you always add unripe plantains to your meal plan weekly and start enjoying their medicinal and therapeutic properties.
