INTRODUCTION TO ANAEMIA

Anaemia is a medical condition which is characterized by the low level of packed cell volume in the human blood. Anaemia can also be said to be a reduced level in the haemoglobin concentration of the blood.

Further definitions of anaemia also suggests that it is the incapability of the blood to transport enough oxygen needed by the human body due to the reduced level of haemoglobin concentration in the blood.
There are different types of anaemia and this is due to the factors that cause it.

SYMPTOMS OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH ANAEMIA

• Paleness
• Tiredness
• Shortness of breath
• Shortage of blood flow
• Tachycardia (irregular heartbeat in a fast way)
• Dizziness
• Pain in some regional areas of the body

FACTORS WHICH LEADS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANAEMIA

• Blood loss due to injuries or accident
• Irregular formation of red blood cells
• Excessive destruction of red blood cells
• Low concentration of haemoglobin in the blood

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANAEMIA

1. Aplastic Anaemia

This is caused by the inability of the bone marrow to produce or create enough red blood cells for the transport of oxygen. It is usually caused by infections or diseases.

2. Iron Deficiency Anaemia

This is caused when there is a low level of iron content in the blood because iron is very important in the formation of red blood cells (erythrocytes). Iron is also important for the production of haemoglobin.

3. Anaemia due to vitamin deficiency

Vitamins are very essential for the maintenance of proper body functions. Vitamins are also necessary for the production of red blood cells and its components. An insufficiency in vitamins can lead to anaemia.

4. Chronic Disease Anaemia

This kind of anaemia is usually caused by the presence of chronic diseases. Eg: cirrhosis.

5. Hemolytic Anaemia

This type of anemia is usually caused by the excessive destruction of red blood cells by the spleen. When the destruction of red blood cells is excess, it leads to change in the level of red blood cells and this can lead to anaemia.
