THE SKULL

Ever wondered how the bone of the head (skull) is? Ever wondered the number of bones that make up the skull whether they're are many or few?
Good day steemian! I trust your day is going on well. Today, I'll be taking us into the medical field (into the world of human anatomy specifically) and I'll be talking about the skull which is otherwise called Cranium.

ABOUT THE SKULL

The skull is a variety of bones which merge together with the aid of sutures to form a a large entity which protects the glands and organs which are present in the human head. eg: Brain, hypothalamus, thalamus, pituitary gland etc.
The skull can be divided into two major categories which helps in its formation. They are:

  1. Cranium (Calvarium)
  2. Facial bones

THE CRANIUM

The cranium is the uppermost part of the skull. It comprises of sutures and different bones which helps in its formation.

1. Cranial Roof

The cranial roof is made up of 4 major bones.

  • Frontal bone
  • A pair of parietal bones
  • A pair of temporal bones
  • Occipital bone

2. Cranial base

The cranial base consist of 6 major bones and they are:

  • Ethmoid
  • Sphenoid
  • Frontal
  • Occipital
  • Temporal
  • Parietal

I'll like to explain the meaning of some terms I'll be using in this educative post.

(a). Sutures

These are joints in the skull which helps in joining or merging different bones of the skull together.
There are different sutures of the skull and they are:

Coronal Suture
This is a suture of the skull which differentiates or separates the frontal bone from the parietal bone.

Lamboid Suture
This is a suture of the skull which separates the the parietal bone from the occipital bone.

Frontal Suture
This suture runs through from the uppermost part of the head to the middle of the forehead.

Sagittal Suture
This helps in separating the two parietal bones and it runs through from the front of the head to the middle of the head.

THE FACIAL BONES

The facial bone is made up of 14 bones. This form the skeleton of the face. These bones are listed below.

  • Zygomatic (2)
  • Lacrimal (2)
  • Nasal (2)
  • Inferior Nasal conchae (2)
  • Palatine (2)
  • Maxilla (2)
  • Vomer (1)
  • Mandible (1)
