What is Hepatitis?
Hepatitis can be acute or chronic.
Chronic infection is very dangerous because it mars the liver greatly. It leads to a cancerous liver, liver failure or cirrhosis which is a condition whereby the liver develops scars
Acute hepatitis starts showing symptoms with 2_3 weeks if being infected, while chronic hepatitis may not show any symptoms till after several years.
There are 5 major types of hepatitis and they differ by their mode of transmission and how severe it can be to the body.
They are
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Hepatitis D
- Hepatitis E
But Hepatitis B and C are the most dangerous and most severe because they lead to severe chronic liver ailments.
Types and causes of Hepatitis
Hepatitis A
This can be developed when one is infected by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV) it can be contacted when food or water that is contaminated by feaces or other waste product of a hepatitis patient is consumed.
Hepatitis B: this can be contacted by coming in contact with infectious body fluids like blood or Genital fluids of A patient infected with the -
Hepatitis B virus(HBV)It can be spread by
- Having sexual relations with an infected hepatitis B patient.
- Sharing of needles
- A pregnant woman with hepatitis B can pass the virus down to the baby. But the babies can be vaccinated but are still liable to develop the virus in future too.
Hepatitis C: it is caused as a result of the Hepatitis c virus (HCV) and can be spread by coming in contact with human fluids like blood.
Hepatitis D: this is caused when the hepatitis B virus in the body of a patientz stays for a long time, then finally conjugates to produce this rare breed of hepatitis virus. It is very special because it cannot be contacted but is only developed from long term hepatitis B infection.
Hepatitis E: this can be developed by taking food and water that is contaminated abd is exposed to the hepatitis E virus ( HEV) it due to poor sanitary hygienes and contamination of water with feaces.
There are other types of hepatitis like autoimmune hepatitis which is a condition whereby the immune system produces antibodies that fight against the liver.
Alcoholic hepatitis which is as a result of excessive alcohol intake that leads to the liver being inflamed and liver failure.
Symptoms of Hepatitis
Take note that the Symptoms of Hepatitis is likely to someone ill from normal malaria, but one special thing about it is feeling tired and nauseous.
Fever
Nausea
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Urine has a dark red colour
Eyes colour becomes yellow
Muscle and joint pain.
Whenever you develop any of this Symptoms, be sure to contact your
doctor.
Prevention
Get vaccinated: although there is no vaccine for the Hepatitis C and E virus yet, the Hepatitis A virus has a vaccine which can be used to prevent getting infected with the virus. There is also a vaccine for hepatitis B which in turn is able to prevent hepatitis D.
Abstain from anything that exposes you to the virus: like needles or body fluids which could contain the virus. Do not touch blood spills that is not yours even using personal items that belongs to someone else
Good sanitary habits: be sure to use treated water and avoid using water from dirty places and food that is prepared in a dirty environment.
Avoid alcohol or excessive intake of alcohol, it causes great damage to the liver.
Wash sea foods thoroughly before consumption and be sure to cook it well, the waters they lived in May be contaminated.
Hepatitis can lead to
- liver failure
- Unusual bleeding
- Kidney failure
- Cancerous liver
- Death
Conclusion
This health condition is really deadly and can cause a slow shut down to the body system. As students, we should make sure to take precautions and treatment when inffected to insure a smooth and healthy campus life.
