Introduction
Hello everyone 😊, I'm here again but this time I will be talking about a really serious global issue, global in the sense that it affects alot of people not only here but around the world. No one is above depression as it tends to visit everyone during certain periods in ones life, what matters is the way we take care of it during it's early stages. I will briefly go through the issue and way in which I used to curb mine.
What comes to mind when you hear the word depression?
From an economist's point of view, depression can be said to be a period when an economy faces a fall in economic activities like growth, employment and production activities.
Here, we will be looking at the traditional or layman definition of depression which is a sudden feeling of sadness, without zeal, dejected, frustrated and very empty feeling. At first when I learnt about depression I always thought it could never happen to a cheerful and playful person like me but after 2 years in the University I am here to say no one is above depression.
What are the possible causes of depression today?
Based on a little research and experience here are the familiar causes of depression I came across,
- Overthinking- Alot of people teenagers and adults alike think too much about the future and by doing that they put themselves under excess pressure and seclude themselves to their sad world.

Loneliness and negativity- personally I believe loneliness is both a symptom and cause of depression as being alone most attimes gives you that empty feeling of depression and a depressed person usually (not in all situations) starts becoming lonely as he/she goes deeper into depression. Negativity, negative energy and negative thoughts are also attributed to causing depression.
Personality and age- Attimes peoples depression arises from their personality or attitude and as soon as they notice this they ought to find ways of curbing it. Age wise, the elderly are more at risk to depression compared to the young.
Alcohol and drugs- While some people take alcohol and drugs to get out of depression others get depressed by taking said substances mostly after abusing them. Let's always avoid abuse although I know taking drugs isn't bad but we can reduce the abuse to it's barest minimum.
Economic situation- Things unemployment, loosing ones job, economic recession can make one depressed. Not having enough to provide for one's family can also make one go into depression.
Family history- Family problems like divorce, loosing ones child, husband or wife can give them that feeling of emptiness, loneliness, hopelessness. I might not have listed all the causes but I was able to talk about the few which I witnessed and experienced.
Researchers has shown that Social media can also contribute to depression and low self-esteem. We should always take time to cut back on social media abit and take regular walks to get some fresh air.

Some common symptoms of depression include,
- Weight loss
- Loss of interest
- Mood swings
- Restlessness
- Oversleeping/ sleeping less
- Suicidal thoughts, the feeling of wanting to end it all by ending ones life
Conclusion
In as much as there are different reasons for feeling depressed, we must not let it get to us. We must always try to curb it at an early stage.

There is no one way. Everyone has different method which they use. I don't know about the late stage of depression but I said a few things about the early stage
