Being a foodie comes with its problems sometimes. It would amaze you to know that every great foodie's first and last thought on getting to a place is good food. I am telling you this from 19 years, 9 months, 9 days and 17hours of experience. That's a lifetime I suppose.
On gaining admission into the University, while others were worried about how to complete their registrations, I was moving up and down the UNIUYO town campus in search of a good food spot with the tastiest and most affordable food. It became a tradition to try out each eatery on and off-campus. The quest for a good food spot with the most palatable meal continued till my sophomore year in school.
I was very hungry one fateful day after stepping out of two chained lectures that lasted for 2hrs each. As was my tradition, I went about searching futilely in every shed on the school vicinity for Afang soup as opposed to the different varieties of rice that had suddenly become my favourite lunch. The school's cafeteria at the annex campus usually seemed far from Law lecture hall. But on second thought I decided to take this great journey.
The cafeteria was crowded with students as usual. With a glance, I located a spot with a lot of students gathered around. That meant that the food should be tasty and cheap. That was my spec of food sha and so I headed towards there with alacrity. The woman on the other side was quite fast at serving these hungry students because before a minute, my queue became smaller and it was my turn. She gave me a quick smile while I tendered my request. That earned her one point. Then she grabbed one very fine china on the plate rack and began serving me as a dutiful wife will do to her husband. Out of nowhere, she added two extra slices of meat for me with one big wrap of garri. I had to ask her why she did that some days later, and the reply was that she loved my smile. Whatever it was, I don't care as long as I keep enjoying this Afang soup in this hall which also serves as a conference room where I discuss school works with my colleagues.
I am yet to discover another place in the University of Uyo that is as cosy and homey as the cafeteria with my favourite afang soup vendor in it.
