Are You A Driver or A Passenger in Your Life?

This question was the first thing that was thrown at me when I commenced the four-month leadership program held by the @leapafrica for young people. I had to pause to ascertain what kind of answer I had to give.

From our everyday life, waking up to the time we take a rest. Are you a Driver in the front seat controlling the car or are you the passenger who sits and accepts whatever and wherever the driver takes you?

The first week module was value-packed delving deeper into what is expected of a leader.

Leadership is not about giving orders and controlling people, it is more about serving people and understanding the different emotions that control their attitudes. Everyone is a leader, in your home, school, church, workplace. It is not only when the masses gather and vote for you that you become a leader. As long as someone answers to you, you are a born leader.

Through this module, I got to understand that when asked the question Who are you? It is more than just your name, your likes, and dislikes, your career choice. You've got to be able to dictate how you respond to
▪️ Self-Awareness
▪️ Emotional Intelligence
▪️ Time Management.

✔ ️ Self-Awareness gives you the capacity to learn from your mistakes as well as successes, it enables you to keep growing.

"If your emotional abilities aren't in hand, if you don't have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can't have empathy and have effective relationships then no matter how smart you are, you are not going very far". - Daniel Goleman

✔ ️ Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions as well as the emotions of others.
Have you ever been in a situation where someone gets very cranky in the morning and gets angry unnecessarily? You might hear the side talks being made like "who made him angry this morning?" Or "maybe his wife didn't give home food today".

You've got to have the ability to understand that someone's mood is attached to something else and thus you must not allow your emotions to come into play. You have to control yourself and others.

✔ ️ Time Management is not doing a lot of things but the ability to spend this gift (time) doing your highest priority at the right time. You should be able to give an account of how you spend your day before going to bed.
▪️What did I really do today?
▪️ How many hours did I spend on each task?
▪️ What are the top 3 activities that took the most of your time?
▪️️ Are these your highest 3 priorities?
▪️What task did you spend the least time on?
▪️Was it the least of your priorities?
To manage your time properly, you should be able to answer the above questions.

Back to my question, wouldn't you want to feel the freedom that comes with taking the reins of your life? It is high time you started doing something, making your own decisions.
