I suggest going back to Itten's color wheel. We studied the three primary colors and made assignments for them. It is yellow, blue and red. They are in the very center of the color wheel. The next step is secondary colors.

Each of them is obtained by mixing two primary colors. Red + yellow = orange, Red + blue = purple, yellow + blue = green. Secondary colors on the color wheel are indicated by the number 2
