It's rare to see band vocalists becoming successful on their first attempt with a solo album. Rob Thomas achieved such success on his first album "...Something to Be". It doesn't matter if his succeeding albums weren't as successful but there isn't much promotion in those records unlike how other solo artists who came from pop bands like Justin Timberlake and Beyonce.
As many knew, Rob Thomas is the frontman of Matchbox 20. With 3 successful albums of the band, Rob Thomas tried to go solo. But it doesn't mean he left Matchbox 20 as the band had releases in between Rob Thomas' solo albums.
"...Something to Be", the first album, was a number 1 seller in Billboard 200, while scoring a top 10 hit with "Lonely No More". In fact, it is the first time that Rob Thomas will score a number 1 album. In fact, none of the albums of Matchbox 20 prior to his solo record went number in Billboard 200 despite there multiplatinum success.
While Matchbox 20 had limited success in UK, Rob Thomas also reached his peak in UK charts as a solo artist not with his band. "...Something to Be" may not be well-received by the critics, but it has shown Rob Thomas has proven something as a solo artist.
