Our former president, Nelson Mandela wrote a book called 'Long walk to Freedom'. People were very excited about this book.
This man was fondly known by his fellow South Africans as 'Madiba' and a lot of people wanted to read his life story. (There was also a movie made. You can watch the trailer here)
When the book came out the first time it was over 600 pages long and not really for children to read.
Madiba was always very fond of children and he wanted them to share his love of reading and also be able to read and understand his autobiography (life story).
They decided to release this book also as a children's book. (You can buy this book at a bookstore or search on the internet for a copy of it.)
The book tells the story of Madiba's life from when he was born until he became the first democratic elected president of South Africa. It tells the story of how Mandela and his friend fought the 'Apartheid' regime and made it possible in South Africa for everybody to be considered equal and have equal opportunities.
He was arrested for helping to fight apartheid and he and his colleagues from the ANC were charged with treason (planning to overthrow the government).
Mandela told the court that the ANC was a peaceful organisation and he also said
Mandela also believed that all people are born without hate and hating others is something that they are taught. For more of his quotes, you can read here.
Mandela and the other men were sentenced to go to prison for the rest of their lives. They were send to Robben Island but as we all know, Mandela did not stay there until he died. He was freed and became the president.
He believed that all people have the right to be equal, to education and a better life.
He wanted children to understand this and that is why this book was brought out for children and translated into all 11 official languages, so that everybody will have a chance to read it.

Great to know that Madiba cared to write children version of his autobiography. I have tried unsuccessfully in my attempt to buying the book in the online store. Please how did you get your copy cause I would love to read to know if there's been a change in the story line for the ones meant for children.?
