Crufts 2020

I went to Crufts 2020 today. It's an annual event in the UK held by The Kennel Club that celebrates all breeds of dogs from Rescue to pure bred's although it has to be said The Kennel Club is mainly concerned with pedigrees. The show is held every year with the very first event in 1891 at the Royal Agricultural Hall, London, England. The event is named after its founder Charles Cruft and winners of Crufts, Best in Show, go on to extremely lucrative endorsement contracts and appearances all over the world.

Otterhounds

I'd love to have an Otterhound but I just don't have a home big enough for one although the owner of this one tried to convince my daughter that: "They only take up the same amount of room as two cats." Two cats? have you seen the size of these things?

Ottherhounds can only be traced back to the early 1800s even though there are references to Otter hunting dating back to the Middle Ages. They are listed as an endangered native British breed with just under 600 in the world. During an interview with one of the breeders, it transpired that 44 puppies had been born in 2019 which isn't a lot, to be honest. Did I mention I'd love to have one? 🥺

Norfolk Terrier

This is another breed of dog I'd love to have and these two were really friendly little chaps. Terriers are basically Ratting Dogs and can be traced back to the 1880s Their name has gone through some changes over the years, at one time they were known as Cantab Terriers and it became a bit of fad for Cambridge University students to keep them in their rooms. The American Kennel Club recognised Norfolk Terriers in 1936 and they are quite popular in the States apparently.

Next door to these two were some Oxford Terriers. In my layman's eye, the only difference is that the Oxford's ears stand upright while the Norfolk's are bent over. I think it's the Norfolk's ears that attracts me.

Coton de Tulear

Well, what can I say? We own a Cotton, his name is Charlie and he's just over two years old. Charlie, however, looks nothing like his Show Dog counterpart [Right] mainly because we cut Charlie short simply because keeping his coat clean and groomed when it is long is a nightmare.

While they have a French-sounding name the breed is in fact originally from Madagascar and the Malagasy royalty were the only people allowed to keep them until Dr Robert Jay Russell brought the breed to America in 1973 having said that The Coton de Tulear was first formally recognised as a breed by the Societe Centrale Canine (the French national kennel club) in 1970.

Crufts is a great event with hundreds of stands and exhibitions along with countless demonstrations of agility, obedience and working capabilities. If you get the chance to go it's a great day out for all the family. Just take some flat shoes, a bottle of water and be prepared to do a lot of walking I clocked up 15859 steps according to Samsung Health.

I've never been to Crufts. I think my gran may have shown some of her Pekingese there many years ago as she bred them. I guess it is some sort of dog heaven. Some of the breeds do look a bit strange, but I'm sure the owners love them. My parents had a few dogs over the years, but in our house it is cats. We don't show them.

On the whole they're mostly nice people although some come across as pretty full of themselves if not snobby. I have no idea how true it is but one breeder told me, a few years ago, that most of the Top breeders who show at Crufts know the judges really well and do stuff like send Christmas and Birthday cards and I imagine presents. It may have been sour grapes at not doing so well in competitions or maybe there was a nugget of truth there. Sounds a bit like another community, doesn't it? Bwahahaha

Sorry, couldn't resist.

#Seriously

Dog breeding must be a small world, and so they must all know each other. People are imperfect and it's often about who you know.
