THE POTENTIALITY OF A WOMAN by@chidinmajohn

When I was younger, my mother would climb trees; palm trees precisely to harvest palm fruits which she used for production of palm oil. Due to her hardwork and determination, no woman could contend with her physically, morally, financially and other wise. She settled financial issues for men who came for help. Though being a generous woman, she was always turned down by her debtors. Sometimes she would let go for peace to reign.

When I was 12, I started learning how to help her with some of these jobs which no man around her could do. Initially, it wasn't easy for me to overcome the fears associated with climbing to the tops of those palm trees. Looking down to the ground seemed somewhat infinite. I never gave up because my desire was to ease her the stress of doing that as a woman even at her age. I am the youngest boy of five but I had to do just that since the rest were fear stricken.

Of course she taught me herself. Now I can climb better than she does. Anytime I visit home, I always stand in her place.

Growing up as a child, I was so close to my mom more than anyone else even today. I learn from her. She's so fearless and determined. She does virtually everything a man could do.

The lessons I have learnt from my mother so far have made me understand that every woman has a great potential within. The reason why we mostly see women perform less is because they have limitations. They have been restricted within a fixed range by their male counterparts or doctrines, customs and traditions.

I always give women the chance to express themselves in whatsoever way because, another thing they need is the chance to prove their potency. Yes it's true! They need chance! Let's take for example the story of Hua Mulan of China. Her desire to help her people at the war front was coming to die as a dream with no reality. What did she do? She resorted to disguising herself as a man, she fought in the war but lo, no one really knew she was a lady until later. You may check the details of the story to learn more.

The earlier we realise that every man and woman is uniquely endowed, the better. No one was born with all the ideas to make the whole world what it is today. It's as a result of our collective ideas and contributions that have built every aspect of what we see today.

It is quite unfortunate that in our African Continent, women are largely restricted. What a man can do, a woman can do also. Let's not mislead ourselves with the statement that women are weaker vessels. No! Everything you refuse to strengthen becomes weak, and how do you strengthen them? It is simply by giving them the chance to do as well, that's how to test ones abilities. We are missing so many things this time around because we have excluded women in our plans even in the society.

One thing I believe in is that; Everyone can do wonders if they are given the chance. Stand with me let's cheer the women up, let's make Africa understand that women contribute to a large percentage in building every nation.

Let our younger sisters go to school and not end up as teenage mothers and wives in the homes of men who are older than their grand fathers. Let them be given due consideration as human beings that they are. There are so many things we need to correct. A tradition that does not aim at building the future of the young girls but rather subject them to marriage at age 13 is as good as worthless.
