Who does not know the best Indonesian writer, Pramoedya Ananta Toer? Through his phenomenal work, the Buru Island Tetralogy, he produced four novels discussing the historical romances of pre-independence Indonesia, one of which is "Bumi Manusia" which is now being adapted into a film by director Hanung Bramantyo.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer was born in Blora in 1925 in the heart of Java Island. As the eldest child in his family. His father is a teacher, while his mother is a rice seller. Pramoedya's real name is Pramoedya Ananta Mastoer, as written in his semi-autobiographical short story collection entitled "Cerita Dari Blora." Because the surname Mastoer (his father's name) was deemed too aristocratic, he omitted the Javanese prefix "Mas" from the name and used "Toer" as his surname. Pramoedya studied at the Radio Vocational School in Surabaya and later worked as a typist for a Japanese newspaper in Jakarta during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia. Reference source

Pramoedya Ananta Toer's works are based on problems that occurred in the pre-independence period, especially the oppression and slavery of the natives. Although he was detained on the island of Buru, he never stopped his writing activities. This also received support from his friends during his exile on Buru Island. The first volume of the Buru Island trilogy is "Bumi Manusia." The book, which is set in the early 19th and 20th centuries, tells the story of a Javanese youth of aristocratic descent named Minke.

Minke is not his real name, but comes from the word monkey which is used to call the main character given by his teacher. Minke is the son of a regent who attends Hogere Burger School (H B S) in Surabaya. It is said that Surabaya has the notion that writing is an important thing.

Minke is known as a native son who is intelligent and good at writing, whose work is then published in newspapers. "Bumi Manusia" depicts Minke's character as a revolutionary young man who often challenges injustice against his nation. Bumi Manusia is also the first romance to be filmed on the Indonesian big screen, directed by Hanung Bramantyo.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer in his first tetralogy describes how the condition of the natives in the colonial hegemony has deteriorated. The existence of arbitrary oppression, concubines, and the emergence of social strata place the natives in the lowest class. Such conditions made Minke fight back by writing in newspapers.

"Arus Balik" is a novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer which tells the story of the archipelago in its heyday. After the fall of the Majapahit kingdom (1478 AD), the archipelago had to face the opposite reality. At the time of Majapahit, the archipelago was the largest maritime and maritime empire in the world.

But the tide turned, the North controlled the South and controlled the life of the archipelago and caused division. Until finally Indonesia and its surroundings had to accept the fact that it had been colonized for centuries.

"Jejak Langkah" is a continuation novel of the Buru Island trilogy after "Child of All Nations." In this book, Minke is told to fight against the colonial government by forming an organization and building the press. He used it as a tool to mobilize the masses to get involved in resisting colonialism.

In 1901, Minke continued his education at the School tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen (STOVIA) or the Indigenous Medical Education school. Students who study here will be employed by the governor (Dutch colonial government). Since school, Minke has never stopped writing. His writings relate to and criticize the government and his writings are published in newspapers.
