in hive-126193 •  2 years ago
Thanks to @drhira for inviting me to this vibrant community. I never imagined I’d be able to participate in such a lovely contest started by @simonnwigwe and share descriptions of dresses from my part of the world with you all.
Please Note- Traditional Dresses are for special occasions but in normal course I wear suits at work and jeans and tees in routine.

First of all, I will list and explain the activities for which we use these attires, but you will have to be patient since we have thousands of them and explaining them is not so easy. I will tell you about my own traditional dresses in the end, but I will give you a rough idea about a few traditional dresses from other states.

We have our own traditional clothes, just like every other country.Since you have asked, I will tell you about some of my Indian traditional dresses.

As you know, there are many states in India with different dialects and different fashions and dresses. However, nowadays in this era of fashion, almost everyone all over the world wears the same clothes, and they also change with time. Western culture was brought to every corner of the world by the British, but even now some residents of each place are seen wearing clothes according to their ancestors and circumstances.

Sherwani

Sherwani is a type of traditional male formal wear. It is a knee-length jacket or coat-like outfit mostly worn by men in northern India. But now many others are following suit. In another form, its length is to the knee, which is called a jacket achkan. It is a popular dress worn in marriage ceremonies.

kurta-pajama

Kurta pajamas are a traditional Indian dress that is very popular among Indian men. Another variant of the kurta pajama is the Margani suit, more popularly worn in places like Srinagar. This combination is suitable for festivals and celebrations.

Ferran

Ferran is the traditional dress for both men and women in Kashmir. A full-length gown, popular among both men and women, is frequently seen in northern India. This gown is specially designed for the snowy mountains surrounding Kashmir.

If I talk about myself, then I come from the state of Goa in western India, although I came to the country’s capital, Delhi, at a very young age. Goa is famous for its beautiful beaches and festivals, and Portuguese influence is still visible in the costumes worn there.

The state of Goa, surrounded by 35 beaches at Arabian Sea is famous as "the Rome of the East" and "the Portuguese Colony." The Portuguese ruled Goa for hundreds of years, so the Portuguese influence is still very much visible in the Goan lifestyle, food habits, and costumes here. Despite being a state of India, it differs from all other states. The historical heritage in Goa has been well preserved, making it possibly the best combination of eastern and western civilizations.

If you ask me, not one garment can be called the traditional costume of this state. For instance, Kunbi sarees, pano bhaju, midi dresses, and resort wear are in vogue here. We celebrate Christmas, Easter, Carnival, Diwali, Shigmo, the autumn festival, Chavoth, Ganesh Chaturthi, Samvatsar Padav (Gudi Padwa), and Dussehra here and wear costumes according to the festivals.

Everyone knows that Goans love their music and sports. The cultural dances of Goa include Dekni, Fugdi, Corridinho, Mando, Dulpod, and Fado, besides the Spanish dances the sailors brought here.

The hallmark of Goa is the Kunbi saree.

Kunbi is a tribal tribe living in Goa, whose dress has become the identity of Goa today. Kunbi is a cotton saree with small squares in white. Farmers and working women wear this sari with a check pattern. Silk threads are used in its border dobby. They also considered the check pattern of the saree Navagraha, the nine planets. The literal meaning of Kunbi is "Kun," meaning people, and "Beed," meaning seed. It refers to the people who make many seeds from one seed, the farmers. The fabric was originally the mark of farmers and workers, and there are many ways to wear it.

Basically, Kunbi is red, and saffron is the color of youth. Apart from that, purple is worn during marriage and black during old age and death. The men wear a red-and-white dhoti called Kashti and easily climb the coconut tree. Women’s tying technique is also unique. The reddish-white Kunbi saree is worn only by married women, while the light purple color is worn by widows. The women of some tribes wear a garment made of tree bark called Valkal with a garland of different beads.

Mando’s dress is pano bhaju.

It is a typical garment worn by women in Goa. A dhoti-like skirt is worn with an embroidered blouse, and they put a stole or dupatta over it. Mando, the folk dance of Goa, is performed wearing this dress. Mando was a musical festival celebrated among the Catholics of Goa in ancient times. Men wear formal clothes, while women wear pano bhaju.

Women’s Kashta Saree by Fisherman

Goa is in the Konkan region in Western India, the men here wear knee-length lungis with a colorful T-shirt or vest. A cap, usually of a red color, is worn on the head. On the occasion of marriage, men wear a white lungi with a colorful T-shirt that has silk thread work on the border. Women, on the other hand, wear a Kashta saree.

Vahadlo Shigmo

It is celebrated with pomp across the state. The festival coincides with the arrival of spring and honors the homecoming of warriors who went to fight against invaders. In this festival, men wear a traditional kurta in white or orange, a dhoti, or pajamas, and tie a turban on their heads, while women dance wearing Koli, the Nauvari saree.

Goa Carnival attire is red and black

When one hears the word "Carnaval," one imagines people dressed in colorful and unique costumes dancing and dancing in the streets of Brazil or Trinidad. The same splendor is seen in the Goa Carnival, which is held in February or March every year.

The carnival in Goa was started by the Portuguese. It was earlier celebrated only by Catholics, but gradually it became one of a kind, in which everyone took part with great enthusiasm. A three-day carnival is celebrated before the beginning of the month of Lent. During the month of Lent, people abstain from meat, and some also fast. The month ends with Easter, which is a big celebration for Catholics.

The Goa Carnival is like those in Brazil, Spain, and Australia, but it incorporates the state’s unique cultural characteristics. There is always a large gathering, and they enjoy this event filled with fun and music. And one has to be there to see the people who take part in colorful clothes and different masks. Women, children, men, and elders all enjoy this festival to the fullest. At the end of the carnival, the Goans dance in red and black costumes. In this, women wear red tops and black skirts, and men wear red shirts and black pants and dance to the loud tunes of the music.

Yes, I consider my traditional dress close to my heart, even though I have only worn it once or twice. The cost of this dress is about INR 4000, which would be roughly 350 STEEM. I can give you the price of every cloth worn by men and women according to their financial status, but that will take a lot of space and your time, so I will end my post here.

I would love to see these lovely ladies participate in this contest.
