THE INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED |
---|
My name is Marvelous Sunday Udofia and I happen to have a mother who is a citizen of Cameron. With this I share a dual nationality since my dad is a Nigerian. By virtue of Mummy being a Cameronian, I love to visit a part of Cameron called Idibayanga during my long vacations. During my last visit around February 2024, something unusual happened which put the whole village into great fear.
We were in our farm land when some village vigilante group dragged a young man passed us. This man was dragged as someone who had stolen the sun that brightens the whole world, or like someone who had drain all the fishes in the sea into his house. This scene made my dad curious to know what really happened so he asked one of them to tell him in detail what this man has done.
It was at this point that we realized that this young man went into partnership with two of his friends and the agreement was to clear a large portion of land together, plant cassava together then divide the cultivated land into three equal parts for themselves. The clearing of the land and the plantation went well, but after the plantation, one among the three friends got missing and no one knew his whereabout. Not even his wife and unborn child could say where he was. Sadly or happily, 7 days after his sudden disappearance, an hunter set into a muddy forest for hunting only to realize a well cleared portion of land consisting of a planck and the corpse of the missing person on it. Without autopsy, it was noticed that the dead man struggled heavily before dying and that he was being slaughtered on the neck as a goat. All indications pointing to the fact that it wasn't a single man murder.
Before this time, the other two friends who went into partnership with the dead man had divided the cultivated portion of land into two equal parts neglecting the missing person because they knew what they have done to him. It was these signs that made the village to consult their fortune teller
And it was discovered that the two other friends killed him so as to claim his portion of the cultivated land. This, prompted his arrest though his partner ran away. After series of attempts to migrate to Nigeria, he was unable to escape and was finally arrested and both of them where handed over to the Cameron Government.
The most interesting part of the story came in about 14 days after the death of the young man when some group of people came to our farm land and asked for directions to where the corpse was found. When I identified four young men, two ladies and an old woman, my dad saw four young men, two ladies and a retired principal (mother of the corpse) who have been a one time office holding politician in Nigeria. Many thoughts ran on my head as I wondered why the son of such and influential person would go into petty farming here in an interior bush when the mother is during very well.
The news became even more interesting when Dad told them that they needed to trek a distance of more than 15 km before getting to the spot where her late son laid helplessly. And before then, she needed to trek a distance of about 2 km to the village head's residence so as to create awareness of them taking the remains of their son back to Nigeria for burial. To my greatest surprise, the old woman accepted and the journey began. When they left, Dad told me how he now recognize the woman and was able to identify the corpse through his mother.
Daddy mentioned that the woman refused to send his son to school, learn a skill nor ever cared for him. Reasons centered on certain spiritual engagement which she involved herself and probably might have vowed never to care for his son only when he was dead. Now the son died and he crossed over to Cameron so as to take his dead body and bury. After series of activities, they finally met the decomposed body, used clothes and wrapped the scattered bones then headed back to Nigeria for a well furnished burial. It was indeed a pathetic story that a woman would hate her son yet love his corpse.
THE IMPACT IT HAD ON ME AND WHAT I LEARNT FROM THE STORY |

The very fact that the murderers did not have an opportunity to harvest from the very land that made them kill teaches me the importance of being honest and sincere in all my doings. This is because, if they never killed the man, they would have harvested peacefully from their land. But at the moment, they have loss the land and as well as their freedom. In essence Honesty, truthfulness and sincerity must be a key virtue for all mortals.
Also, it is true that if the woman had cared for her son, perhaps he wouldn't have been a victim of such an ugly circumstance. Here, the story has shown me the essence to love and care for those who are within my reach.
Though my story is a very pathetic one, I hope it has touch someone and will make such a person live for good.
