The Debate (no.40); Comedy

Introduction

Entertainment, as we may know, is those activities that bring fun. They are activities that bring excitement and joy. Those activities come in different ways. They could be in the form of songs, spoken words and expressions.

However, entertainment makes up the performing arts. Talking about drama and comedy in the entertainment industry, I'd say they're both interesting and entertaining. How entertaining a particular one is depends on our individual choices.

Comedy

Talking about the most entertaining amongst the two for me is comedy. You see comedy? It is an antidote to sadness, boredom, stress, depression and even heartbreak. Oh yes, I mean it. Comedy brings immediate laughter and excitement and relief. It lightens one's mood immediately and gives a lifting in the spirit.

You see, everything about comedy is entertaining. From the comedians

• Facial expressions
• The words of the comedians be it song or spoken
• Comedian's attires
• Dance or body movements
• Even his choice of words and language

There's no way anyone who is depressed or heart broken hears a good comedy without bursting into laughter, no matter the level of pain the person maybe going through.

A friend of mine who lost a seven-year relationship cried her eyes out because of the breakup with her fiancé. She was completely lost and unhappy, but a few of our friends planned that we would take her to a comedy show on one of the weekends. We booked the tickets without her knowledge, just praying that she'd follow us. Though she refused initially and said she wasn't going, in the end, she agreed to follow us for the show that evening.

All our eyes were on her, trying to make her smile before we got there, but she didn't respond. By the time we entered the hall, we met the first comedian making her presentation. My friend's facial looks had brightened up. By the end of the show, she was already laughing so hard, trying to mimic the comedians at the show. It was quite fun and entertaining that she could laugh out and forget her sorrows.

Drama, on the other hand, is entertaining but no one can tell what it will turn out to be. Drama can be comic as well, but if not certain, it can be horrific, romantic, tragic etc. As much as it entertains, if it's not on the comic scene, if horrific or tragic, it may add more to a person's condition, either hurting or bringing back memories that may not be pleasing. If it's a romantic or emotional one, it can be a reminder that may hurt a person who just lost a relationship like my friend did. You know what this means? Endless cries and heartbreak.

Though drama leaves a lasting impression and memories, it's entertainment and humour, if not comic, won't bring that fun and excitement like comedy does.
