Stories, learnings and reflection #03/( It's good to be humble)

Why humility, what is Humility. This is one of the best qualities anyone should possess. With humility, I will not look down as others as if I am better than them . Humility will help someone to respect others irrespective of age, gender, tribe and country. By being humble, I will value and respect everyone the same as I value my self. My story today lies in humility as I want to share a story from a keke man (tricycle rider). He shared his life story and how being humble has helped in his journey to find a green pasture.

First of all, let me give a little introduction about the man; he has a family of 6, 4 children, and his wife herself. He rides a tricycle (keke nape) to earn a living and to cater for his family. Most of the time, when there is no passenger, he would help the fish sellers to deliver catfish to the customer. Because of his good quality, the fish sellers sometimes dash him some fish, even the customer because of his good conduct unlike other riders.

He is a simple man, with a casual dressing code. There was a time I thought differently about him, but when I began to communicate with him, he was so perfect. Now this is where the story from him begins. At one night after I closed from work, it was late, probably about 9pm. Everywhere was dark as everyone has gone home except me.

At that time, the fish seller has gone home, but they drop fish for him to deliver to a customer. All of his colleagues were home with their family at that time. Immediately, he saw me. He came to my shop while we talked about sales. He now decided to share a little advice with me.

"Anything you're doing in this life, try and be humble. Being humble can take you to places you did not expect. I worked with a woman 5 years ago, and I was so committed to my work. I do everything possible to gain her trust. Though offending me sometimes, I did not relax because I know what I want. When it was time to leave her, she bought me keke (tricycle) that I use till today."

"Do you know how much I make in this keke? I got it because I humbled myself. Even this woman that is selling fish, I supply fish to their customers, but I do not charge them high. That is why most of them will prefer to call me because they know I am reliable. Most of the time, at the end of the day, they would give me fish to take home. Some of the customers I supply also dash me fish when I deliver. So, my dear, you are working under someone, don't let anybody make you stand against your boss. All those things you want, but you do not have now, you will have them in the future when you make your money."

"Keep yourself down, be like a slave. Some would see you as a unwise person, but do not listen to them. Let your boss see you as a person she can trust, and you will see the benefits. Sometimes people will laugh about the way I dress, and I like it like that, very simple. It does not mean I do not have money, but I will not do anything to prove myself to be something I am not."

Incredible, for her former boss to spend that huge amount of money to get her a haircut, it means he truly behaved well when he was with him*. I had learned a lot from his advice.

Like I said, working under someone is not easy, especially with someone outside the state. And secondly, being a sales personnel is not as easy a task as anything being handed over to you and then something happens to it, you must bear the consequences for it. So many salespeople have been stealing from their boss, and at the end they get caught, and they are sack. Therefore is nothing as good as leaving a working place with a smile in our boss faces the same way he welcomes you in.

I learned to be humble to my boss, respect her and gain her trust. Who knows what she has in store for me. I want to be person whereby anytime she remembers my name, she will be like: I really miss this boy, he was a good person, a good employee. A good reputation is the best thing in life.
