The Debate (no.48); My Thoughts about Standardized tests and Intelligence

In the educational world, we have seen different theories and postulations concerning the ways on how to rate a child's intelligence. But tests and examinations have been a top priority in the educational world. A question do arises "Aren't there other ones which are effective?" In this article, let's find it out.

Do I think everyone has the same chance to do well on Standardized tests?

For me, I don't think everyone has the chance to perform well on standardized tests. If one goes into the research of children, one will find out that children from different backgrounds have their chances and misses. Even if they write the standardized test with others, not all can reach the particular aim of that test. There was a particular time I went for a test in school. The situation around me was that I couldn't submit my four files and it's placement at that time was crucial. My mind was just wavering during that test and I knew the outcome from the beginning.

How do I think that Student's background or environment affects their test scores?

I totally agree that a student's background can pose an influence on their test scores. Imagine a child coming from a background where education is not really valued giving the child more period of fun. In the aftermath of the test, this child result will be relatively poor compared to the one whose environment and background cherishes education.

Other ways of measuring intelligence

Aside from standardized tests, there are other ways that can be used to measure intellects. They include the following:

  • Practicals: This is an efficient way of measuring intelligence. Imagine showing someone a process but the person couldn't replicate what you just did. With that, one can understand the value of a practical session on the life of a student.
  • Oral Examination: This way might be underestimated but it's just suitable and perfect for almost all situations in the classroom. Before learning is made, a person communicates to the learner. So, the process includes the learner communicating back to the instructor. It's helpful and can be termed a good way of accessing intelligence.
Role of Anxiety in a student's performance in a test

Anxiety generally affects a student's performance in a test. For every student, anxiety is a normal feeling that is seen during tests or examinations. Moderate anxiety is the only anxiety that can actually help a student in his or her test. Over or under anxiety is bad and can lead to adverse effects to the students involved.

Can Intelligence be defined in different ways, and how does that relate to standardized testing?

Apart from standardized tests, intelligence can be seen in various ways. For me, I can define Intelligence as a sense of maturity due to personal development. At times, people do note Intelligent people due to the fact that they read and pass their tests or examinations. But, an intelligent person can be seen by the way he or she behaves either in public or private.
