What's frozen shoulder? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.

To the best of my knowledge, Frozen Shoulder is a condition where one shoulder is joined gradually. It is also known as adhesive capsulitis. Simply put, frozen shoulder is known as a disorder that is caused by adhesions, thickening, inflammation, shoulder joint capsular restrictions, and age-related changes which are mainly old people with a history of diabetes. Anyone who is between 40 years of age is likely to experience this disorder.

The condition of a frozen shoulder develops in four stages, in which the first is the painful stage, in which shoulder movement causes significant pain, during night hours. Over this moves into stage two which is the frozen stage, where the pain reduces small but the shoulder becomes stiffer, limiting movement in activities like reaching behind the back.

The third stage is the thawing stage, which allows gradual improvement in mobility which may take roughly 12 to 18 months to fully regain movement, and some residual pain can persist.

In terms of treatment, it is based on the stage, which often involves corticosteroid injection and physical therapy to improve the range of motion, in some cases if the shoulder doesn't improve, surgery can be carried out.

How would you diagnose a frozen shoulder? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?

Well, I am not a medical practitioner, but in a situation where I begin to experience a frozen shoulder, I will not waste time to see a medical practitioner or therapist for immediate treatment or diagnosis which I believe involves both the combination of clinical investigation and assessment tests.

Clinical Investigation

  • The doctor will ask me about symptoms and check my shoulder range of motion in two different ways such as;
  1. Active range of motion; I will move my shoulder myself for the doctor and myself to see how far it can go.

  2. Passive Range of Motion; The doctor will move my shoulder for me to see if it has the same limitations.

If both ways are restricted, a freeze may be suspected.

Assessment tests

  • X-rays This will help to point out other issues like bone spurs and arthritis.

  • Ultrasound: This will help the doctor and I to identify if there is any other damage to soft tissues like ligaments or tendons around the shoulder and confirm the tightening or thickening of the shoulder capsule which is well-known in frozen.

Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs, or videos while practicing.

Wand Shoulder Flexion

As I woke up this morning what was on my mind was how I can improve the flexibility of my shoulder and range of motion so my shoulder can move freely as I want it. For me to improve my shoulder flexibility I opt for this exercise which involves the use of a long stick to assist me in moving my shoulder without me relying on the affected muscles which you can see in the video.

Cross Body Stretch

This is the exercise that I did to help increase the flexibility of my shoulder and reduce tension as I was feeling shoulder tightness before I did the exercise. In this exercise, I take one of my arms and bring it across to my chest at about shoulder height which I then gently pull my arm closer to my body feeling the stretch in my shoulder. I kept my shoulders relaxed and avoided my shoulders twisting my torso which you can see from the video.

Shoulder circle

This is the exercise that I did that helped me to improve the flexibility of my shoulder, increase my blood flow, and relieve stiffness in the shoulder area which I was feeling tight. I will keep on doing these exercises to keep my shoulder joints loose and reduce the risk of having an Injury.

Share your review after performing these exercises either on a healthy individual or a patient.

Just as I said earlier in the early hours of today 2-11-204, I was feeling shoulder tightening and a bit of pain which prompted me to do this challenge. The good news about me is that after performing these exercises I feel more relieved and flexible in my shoulder.

I feel a gradual improvement in my range of motion and I also noticed an increase in my motion. Later even when I did the same exercises again, I saw flexible improvement in range of motion and less discomfort.

Observations

Task 1 (2.7/3)
You have shared good knowledge about frozen shoulder, it's second name, stages of frozen shoulder but it has four stages the first one is pre-freezing stage in which symptoms development starts. Also you have to add the phases of frozen shoulder. You need to add a bit more depth about frozen shoulder. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (2.3/3)
In the second question, you have share your knowledge about frozen shoulder, investigations and assessment. I accept your answer but mix both things X rays and ultrasound are investigations and active and passive ROM are the special tests to assess frozen shoulder. But the main thing is you have to add at least 1 or 2 special tests like speed test, yergason test, and many more. You answer this question well. Good.

Task 3 (3.8/4)
You try the wand shoulder flexion, shoulder circles, and cross body stretch in a good way. But shoulder circles should be performed in forward and backward directions for better results. Remember always apply heating pad before performing these exercises. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a good try to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from any shoulder pathology or you suffer from such condition. Thank you.
