Greetings teachers and students!
Welcome to my blog, am delight to participate in this final week of season 21 learning challenge with @ashkan our teacher, here is my homework presentation.
What's disc herniation? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.
A herniated disc in the spine also called bulged, slipped or ruptured is a condition during which a nucleus pulposus is displaced from intervertebral space. It is a common cause of back pain.
Its also condition which refers to a problem with a rubbery disc between the spinal bones.
This condition occurs when the soft centre of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing.
Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. Others can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg.
Not every disc needs intervention. When required, treatment includes medication, physiotherapy and possibly surgery.
main cause of disc herniation
A single excessive strain or injury may cause a herniated disc. However, disc material degenerates naturally as one ages, and the ligaments that hold it in place begin to weaken. As this degeneration progresses, a relatively minor strain or twisting movement can cause a disc to rupture.
disk herniation can compress the entire spinal canal, including all the nerves of the cauda equina. In rare instances, emergency surgery might be needed to avoid permanent weakness or paralysis.
symptoms of disc herniation
Disc herniation can have no symptoms but in rare cases people suffering from disc herniation may experience the following;
• pain area like arm, back, foot, or leg.
• sensory leg numbness and uncomfortable tingling and burning
• muscular muscle weakness, muscle spasms or over active reflexes.
a visible lump or bulge that appears during certain activities or in certain physical positions and goes back in at other times are clear signs of disc herniation.
How would you diagnose a disc herniation? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?
One way to determine if i have a herniated disc is by Laying down on my back with my knees bent and feet flat on the floor Place one hand behind my head and gently tilt my head to the opposite side. If i feel pain in the neck this might be a sign of a herniated disc
Medical History. Doctors will have to ask you about your medical and family history to determine whether a herniated disc is the cause of the symptoms.
Physical Exam. doctors perform a thorough physical examination to look for the cause of the symptoms.
• MRI Scan Radio waves and a strong magnetic field are used to create images of the body's inner structures. This test can be used to confirm the location of the herniated disk and to see which nerves are affected
Other investigation and assessment test include;
X-ray
Electromyogram
CT Scan
Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practicing preferably gifs or videos
Hip Bridging Exercise
I ley down with my back and knees in full flexion and feet flat on the floor and close to the buttock. Then i lifts my hip off the floor towards the ceiling/sky as high as possible hold for seconds before i relax i repeat this 3 time.
Cat & Cow Stretch Exercise
With my both knee on a kneeling position i bend my spine upward with my head down facing my belly button then i stretch and hold for seconds before i release the spine downward with my head up stretch my neck spine as well for another seconds.
William Flexion ( knee to chest stretch)
With my arms held together i grab my leg and pull the knees up to the chest and hold it there for several seconds theni relaxes, drops the leg down and repeats the exercise again.
Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient.
Cat & Cow Stretch Exercise this is my very first time trying on this very exercise holding up and holding down the spine is not easy as it look the stretch was painful at first i had to relax and try again the second time dint hurt as mush as the first time, this is because this improve spine movement which is good for low back pains.
William Flexion ( knee to chest stretch)
This particular excicise dint hurt at all because i have done this for a number of times because it also help reduce postpartum belly fat also this gentle move stretches several muscles across the lower back and buttocks which give anyone suffering from disc herniation a great relief afterwards.
Hip Bridging Exercise i felt the impact of this exercise in my pelvic region, this will help improve movement and increase muscular strength to the hip extensors.
Am might not be a disc herniation patient but the exercise was beneficial to my muscles and spine as well.
I will love to invite @eliany @goodybest @beevicsam to participate in this contest thank you.
Interesting writing. I am just hearing the term disc herniation for the first time and I appreciate your effort in this detailed writing on the topic. I now have knowledge this bone challenge. Thanks for the invite.

I appreciate your nice comments, this topic is very important because so many people are suffering from disc herniation without knowing they are they might mistake it for stress, this post help create awareness to everyone to lookout for some signs and act fast, get diagnosed and start treatment immediately as this might affect the spine and lead to total paralysis. Thank you for stopping by.
