During my nursery school days, I was opportune to go on an excursion to a renowned garden in my city. While at the garden, a classmate of mine suddenly stop and gasp for air as if his nostrils was blocked. Everyone was shocked and scared since we were kids that time. For me, I was so afraid that the little boy might die. From there, my teacher demanded that we should clear the space and took the child to somewhere else. That's how I discovered the sickness, Asthma. In this post, let's see more about Asthma.
My Understanding about Asthma |
---|
Asthma can be termed a lung disease which is caused by an obstruction of the airways due to the presence or increase of various stimuli. In an asthmatic situation, the patient is seen gasping for air as the airway eventually narrows leading to a difficult breathing. This disease can be described to be deadly because any delay in response to the patient may lead to a fatal effect. If anyone should ask me what causes it, I'll say it's mostly allergies from pollen, dusts and other things around us. Another cause might be the crowded environment. It can affect Asthmatic patients in an adverse way.
Ways to Diagnose Asthma |
---|
To diagnose an Asthmatic patients, here are few steps to follow:
- Medical History: This can be decipher using symptoms like shortness of breath, chest tightness or extreme coughing. Triggers like allergens, cold air, etc can also be seen as a medical history mode of diagnosing asthma.
- Physical examinations: We can do this by listening to lung sounds for wheezing and other abnormal situations. Also checking for allergic reactions likes rashes or other signs is also a good way.
- Imaging: Imaging is achieved by using an X-ray to have a image of the internal body so that it can be deciphered.
3 Physical Exercise learnt from the course |
---|
I attempted 3 exercise which I will love to share my mode of executing them.
- Chest Stretch: In this method, I kept my body in its straight mode while clasping my two hands to my back. Despite the fact that it tried to dragged me to an irregular shape, I maintained my stance which made it an exercise.
- Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise: In this method, I choose to stand upright while crossing my left hand across to my right shoulder and placing my right hand on my stomach. The process was to breath in, hold and later releasing it.
- Pursed lip breathing exercise: In this exercise, I say on a chair and I took a heavy breath in. I kept it for a while and released it slowly from my mouth.
My Review about the exercises |
---|
With the attempt of these exercises, there is one thing for sure. The fact is that it can help an asthmatic patient on his or her path of recovery. Even if I am not a asthmatic patient, the exercise I did through the guidance of this course tutor, @askhan was amazing. Am sure that it can help an asthmatic patient in its marvellous ways.
I invite @bossj23, @pandora2010 and @mile16 to this contest.
Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.
Observations
Task 1 (2/3)
You have shared a good knowledge about asthma, and it's trigger. But you didn't add it's symptoms, causes and types. Asthma is a curable condition that can be cured either with medications or physical therapy. I appreciate your effort.
Task 2 (2.5/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination and history taking, and performing investigations. Lung function test and spirometer, sputum analysis are different tests we also perform to assess the patient. A bit more depth require to complete the answer. Good.
Task 3 (2.6/4)
You try the pursed lip, diaphragmatic breathing and chest muscle (pectoralis major) stretch. You did the chest stretch correctly. But in diaphragmatic breathing, you don't need to keep your hand on your neck it should be on your chest and abdomen. In pursed lip you have to exhale like you're blowing a candle. Always remember to take steam or nebulization before performing exercises to relax your muscles & dislodge sputum that can excrete out easily. I appreciate your efforts.
Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from asthma, as winter is the trigger of most people suffering from asthma. Thank you.
