THE EXAMINATION THAT SCARED ME

The approaching of examinations conveys the inception of fear in the mind of students alike. Examinations are the only encumbrances in an otherwise comfortable and easygoing life of a student. Fear of an exam generally occurs either before or during an exam, which can result in the student not being their best. And yes it is usual for anyone to feel scared about an exam.

The fear of examinations is most times not fear in the real sense, but something activeness in the minds of students to combat the challenges that come with the exams.

Was there an exam that got you scared?

I've always known myself to have anxiety before any exam, which usually pushes me to urinate as many times as possible before entering an exam. But there is this one exam I dreaded so much.

I was in my final year of college when it happened, I didn't know what to do if the results went wrong or who I would share my feelings with. I felt the entire world ahead of me depended on this exam and it would crumble in front of my eyes and I could do nothing about it. I kept looking for a way out cause there would be no one to blame except myself if anything went wrong.

This was none other than my Senior Secondary School Exams (SSCE) popularly known as WAEC Exams (West Africa Exam Council) exams. The penultimate exam for anyone to leave Senior Secondary school and prepare for University. I was a student of a Federal Unity College and that added more pressure on my shoulders. My preparation for this exam took me to the hospital once and I even found myself making my first-ever vow in church.

How did you react when you wrote the exam or after the exam?

Since it wasn't a one-day exam, there were days I was more comfortable as I wrote the exam, and there were days I was quite nervous and dazed about the questions as they were indeed tactical questions. On the particular day of my mathematics exam, I almost wet my pants not because I didn't know what to do but because of the presence of security personnel in the hall and the time given.

But after the exams, I felt yeah, that wasn't so bad after all, with all the rumors flying around. I found calm within myself and even paid up to my vow before the results were even released because I was sure with what I did and that came with comfort that I would pass all my papers hopefully.

Can you remember your performance in that exam? Tell us about it

How would I forget such an exam, I very much recall my performance in that examination, even if it wasn't the flying colors I would have wanted, at least I didn't have to take the exams again. The result was pretty decent even for the institute as I was among the certain few who have written this exam without a setback, setting that record for the first time I'm the school

How did you handle your fears in that exam?

The fear I had came with the rumors that no one has written their SSCE here without a drawback. I was clutched with the fear of having the same fate as my predecessors, which pushed me to prepare as I have never done before, exempting myself from all social activities and what have you. As the exams went on, I gained confidence that its just like every other exam I have written before that day, and I'd done my preparations well enough too. That confidence helped me get a hold of myself and I was vindicated by the result.

CONCLUSION

Scholars prepare for examinations days, wee, ks, and months ahead but the day of the examination is always greeted with mixed emotions. There is anxiety about facing a difficult paper and there is also a sense of solace knowing once the papers are over, one can have enough time to play and enjoy.
