Blood Type Study And COVID-19

Does your blood type have anything to do with your susceptibility to viral disease or the outcome of infection? I found this study regarding blood types and COVID-19 extremely interesting.

Here's the results:

"People with blood group A have a significantly higher risk for acquiring COVID-19 compared with non-A blood groups, whereas blood group O has a significantly lower risk for the infection compared with non-O blood groups."

This begged the question, has this been done with other viruses? The answer is Yes! Who knew? I sure didn't. Here's two examples:

Do a search and you'll see. So why is this? What's the difference between the blood types that makes a difference when it comes to viral infections? Well, According to the National Institute Of Health...

"Differences in blood group antigen expression can increase or decrease host susceptibility to many infections. Blood groups can play a direct role in infection by serving as receptors and/or coreceptors for microorganisms, parasites, and viruses."

Basically, there is a genetic difference when it comes to immune cells and therefore immune response. That is interesting!!! By the time this pandemic is over we will be all up to speed on the latest advances in science. Maybe we should receive a diploma!
