Unique traditions of Indigenous Peoples in my ( Nigeria )

Hello everyone, I'm happy today to share with you the unique traditions of the indigenous people in my country Nigeria. Nigeria is a great country with many human and natural resources and with that too we have lots of culture and traditions.

The three major ethnic groups in my country Nigeria are Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. The Hausa culture is found in the northern part of the country whereas the Igbo culture is found in the Eastern part of the country, Yoruba on the other hand are found in the western part of the country.

Tell us interestingly about one unique tradition of indigenous peoples in your country/region.

Today I will be talking about the Igbo culture because that is where I came from. One of the most unique things we celebrate here in this part of the country is the New yam festival.

There are many festivals in the land but the one which is seen as the greatest of them all is the new yam festival. This festival is unique because during this period those who have planted yam harvest it and then celebrate it.

It is a great occasion that takes about a week to be celebrated and many from far and near come back home because of this very celebration. It is an ancient celebration that is found among the people. It unites the people even more because the yam is roasted and then eaten in groups by all the people within the community.

This is the only period where everyone within a given community comes together to eat and drink and after everything, a proper reconciliation is done among those that have any dispute. This is how it is celebrated.

Why is the tradition unique?

It is unique because it is done within the Igbo land alone. I have said earlier that during the period of this festival, a lot of people both far and near come home just to join in the celebration. The celebration also fosters relationships among people in the community.

I said earlier that during the period of these celebrations, everyone eats together. Everyone brings in a part of his or her harvest and then each family will be represented and then they join hands to prepare the food and after that, they all share the food with everyone present in the event.

No one gives to his own family. You will have to serve another family with the food and another person will serve your own family. This is how unity is been promoted. More also, an disagreement is sorted and settled within the period of this event.
