Steemit Engagement Challenge - S6W2: Don't let boredom kill you

The most common way to define boredom in Western civilization is “having nothing to do.” Boredom is generally considered an unpleasant emotional state in which an individual feels a significant lack of interest and has difficulty concentrating on a current activity. The condition is most accurately explained by the French phrase ennui , an existential conception of the absurdity

Here are some causes of boredom:

1. Monotony in thinking . Similar to psychological fatigue, boredom is caused by routine repetition and a lack of interest in the details of our tasks (for example, tasks that require constant attention, such as people in prison, waiting at the airport). That is, any expected and repeated experience becomes boring. In general, too much repetition of the same thing and too little activation can cause its victims to lose desire and feel imprisoned .

2. Lack of new events.  The flow of events is a state of complete immersion in the task that poses a challenge, but it matches closely with one's capabilities, as it is more like being in one's "zone of focus". Event flow occurs when a person's skills match the level of challenge presented by the surrounding environment and when a task involves clear goals and immediate feedback, so that tasks that are too easy are likely to be boring. Conversely, tasks that people find too difficult lead to anxiety.

3. The need for renewal.  Some individuals are more prone to boredom than others. People with a strong need for novelty and an urgent need to do multiple exciting things are more likely to get bored. These people looking for new sensations (such as skydivers) feel that the world is moving so slowly that the need for external stimulation is what explains why cheerful people in particular tend to get bored. Looking for everything new and taking risks is the best way for this type of person to cure their boredom.

4. Pay attention.  Boredom is associated with attention problems. What makes us bored does not fill our attention completely, as we see that it is difficult to show our interest when we cannot focus on a specific task. People with chronic attention problems such as ADHD have a high tendency to be bored.

5. Emotional awareness. People who lack self-awareness are more likely to be bored. A person who is bored is unable to express what he wants, so he has problems expressing what he feels. Not knowing what makes a person happy can lead to deeper existential boredom, as not knowing what to look for means that we lack the ability to choose appropriate goals for engaging with the world (Eastwood 2012).

6. Internal entertainment skills.  Individuals who lack the internal resources to deal with boredom constructively will depend on external stimulation. However, in the absence of inner entertainment skills, the outside world will always fail to provide sufficient excitement and renewal.

7. Lack of autonomy.  People get bored a lot when they feel trapped, and feeling isolated is such a big cause of boredom that they are so stuck or chained that they can't carry out whatever their will chooses. For example, adolescence is the peak period of boredom, in large part because children and teens are not

given much control over what they want to do .

Moments of boredom can be used to explore different possibilities within the mind.

Feelings of boredom and meaninglessness may be a sign that we are not appropriately engaged with the world around us, and sometimes those feelings are a voice telling us to try what we do better, or to try completely new things.

Boredom can set in even with a good job or meaningful activities that may feel easier or more difficult than we think.

Some people may sometimes resort to activities that make them feel better in the moment, but do not provide long-term meaning or challenge, such as watching TV, gorging on snacks, or even sleeping to escape those feelings.

Here are some steps that may help us overcome boredom:

Enjoy stillness. We are currently feeding on entertainment or work. People no longer know what it means to just sit quietly. We feel guilty when we don't do something, because of the constant desire for sensory stimulation.

If boredom is a desire for sensory stimulation, its opposite is contentment and the experience of enjoying stillness and relaxation.

Find rhythm Routine helps organize the days, providing a sense of coherence and security that enhances the meaning of life.

Boredom often appears with people at the time of retirement, leaving work, or with any change in the routine of life.

Planning and goal setting Planning and prioritizing make sure there are no stale time gaps that bore us.

It can be arranged by dividing large projects into smaller projects, which keeps you productive, rather than just being distracted without a goal, because boredom often hides a problem when you want to do a certain activity, but something is stopping you.

So find out what you really want to do, by asking yourself questions, while answering honestly: Set aside time for activities that bore you, such as answering letters or email, rather than allowing them to cause constant interruptions during the day.

Turn boring routines into learning opportunities, such as listening to an audiobooks, a lecture while driving, or everyday activities.

Set a vision for your life, and determine how everything you do contributes to enhancing or detracting from it.

Perhaps some of the things that don't align with your vision are the same things that cause boredom.

After you've identified low-priority activities, you can try to make them more feasible, or even get rid of them altogether.

It is easy to indulge in multiple external goals that do not fulfill their promises of success or achievement, so you must focus on distant goals that fully improve the quality of life, along with work that provides financial income.

Boredom is not the same as fatigue.

The first happens when you have an excess of one form of energy.

Like finding yourself unable to get work done, but

at the same time not feeling physically tired. Here, you must look for an approach to driving boredom, such as going out to exercise. Boredom can not only be eliminated by external methods, and it is not only about what you do, but also about how you do it.

Each of us must have his own inner world, in which he can find what he prefers, come up with new ideas, or dialogue with oneself, and plan for the future, all of which are ideas that can be explored inside the mind without any external stimulus. So moments of boredom can be used to explore the different possibilities within the mind, loosen up a bit, and accept, when resistance becomes futile
