Space Exploration: Are We Prepared for Mars?
Mars has always intrigued researchers, but are we indeed ready to put humans up there? As much useful information has been collected through robotic missions, its human counterpart is still challenged. The astronauts would undergo a number of challenges including travel for period of 7 months, space radiation exposure and hostile climatic environment among others. Most of the critical technologies, ie developed long-life support equipment and effective propulsion system are still works in progress. Besides, it is important to realize that even in the case of success, the socializing and physical conditioning during the stay will also be a viable objective to cater for.
Agencies like NASA, SpaceX and others are making tremendous strides towards actualizing their dreams with hopes of sending humans on the moon sometime during the 2030s. On the other hand colonizing mars would be a more demanding task that will need the participation of various countries across the globe, the advancement in science and technology and efficient evaluation of all the circumstances. We are advancing in the right direction. But more work is needed for the safe and sustainable first footprint of humanity on Mars.
