A teacher-dominant mode of teaching whereby the teacher prepares lessons with instructive intent is referred to as direct instruction. In practice, this is quite a structured approach since lessons are usually in form of a lecture with the use of demonstrations and explanations in sequential order. There is a focus on clear guidance with the teacher demonstrating speaking for students working and assessing.

One of the advantages of direct instruction as a method of teaching is that people can acquire and master many tasks in a short period of time. It is important especially when the learners are acquiring basic concepts and skills for example simple numeracy skills as well as acquiring content knowledge in science and history. Besides, it applies such that students understand what is required of them in terms of that lesson cognitive attributes.

On the other hand, direct instruction could stifle students’ participation and wonderment since a considerable amount of time will be spent on passive activities. To remedy this, teachers may use questioning as a strategy as well as come up with other activities that will make the students active. Nevertheless, this approach in teaching is very much needed especially for the first time the new learning content is presented to students or revisiting the with fundamental meanings.material
