Ecosystems depend on birds for their conservation as they help in pollination, seed dispersion and control pest populations among others. They are found in almost every corner of the planet as there are more than 10,000 species of birds. Because of their biological evolution, birds occupy multiple environmental niches enhancing ecological order.
Birds help the in the fertilization of plants by their actions. Mouth parts that are specially adapted for feeding on nectar ensure that many plants such as those in the hummingbird and honey creeper families are able to grow due to the cross pollination by these birds. Also, several birds consume fruits and berries and seeds are excreted in their droppings promoting gardening and the growth in the number of plants.
In addition, birds also reduce the abundance of insects. For example some animals swallows and sparrows are insect eaters and these tend to eat few insects while crops undergo growth which helps all kinds of animal in pest management. Such forms of biological pest control are necessary for the practice of organic farming.
Unfortunately, there is a decline in the number of birds due to lost habitats, global warming and pollution of the environment. Supporting their habitats and facilitating conservation of the biodiversity is important. When birds are preserved, the population balance for both animals and people who live on land is guaranteed. Understanding the web of life is an essential factor for development of any healthy planet.
