Ever heard the name Royston Drenthe? Maybe, maybe not. He is a player who had a lot of potential to be one of the greatest but...
I got to know about Drenthe when I first played PES10. I used to play with the Real Madrid team a lot. There was this time I was playing, and when I went down the reserves to make a substitute, I found a not-so-famous-but-talented guy. And I'm not joking, he used to score almost every free kick I played him with and even though he was a left winger, I could play him as a LB and AMF, it was wonderful to use him in the game. So I was like, who the hell is this guy? How come no one is talking about him? Was he even still at Madrid? Because it was 2011 at the time and I was playing the PES10, so I was wondering if he was still there. Then to satisfy my numerous queries, I began my research.

His full name is Royston Ricky Drenthe and a Dutch man. His height and age are 167cm and 33years respectively. Drenthe graduated from the youth side of Eredivisie side Feyenoord to the senior team on the first day of the year 2006.
Since he was so talented and promising, Real Madrid bought him for around 14M€ the following year on August 13.
His spell there didn't go as planned so he went on numerous loans.
Madrid first loaned him to Hercules CF on August 2010. He came back to Madrid the next year after a disappointing loan spell only to be loaned out again to premier league side, Everton. When he came back to Madrid, he got released as a free agent. He stayed a free agent for several months then finally got signed by Alania. From Alania, he moved to Reading, Sheffield Wednesday then to Kayseri Erciyesspor, then from the again, he moved to Baniyas Sc in 2015. After being released by Baniyas in 2016, he decided quit being a professional footballer at the age of 29. All the catastrophes wasn't really about injuries, but his indiscipline and problems he had with his salary sometimes.

He later resorted to being a rapper, one of his aspirations aside being a footballer.
He released like three tracks and then starred in a Dutch gangster TV series, Mocro Maffia.

After two years of being in music, Drenthe came back from retirement to play for Sparta Rotterdam in 2018.
After Sparta Rotterdam got promoted to the Eredivisie, the club decided not to extend his contract, so he signed for Kozakken Boys in August 2019.
Then recently, on Jan 6, 2021, he signed for Spanish side Racing Murcia. He has really moved around if you ask me.

So this is just a summary of the career of a guy who could be on top of the world with his talent. Eventhough it seems it's all gone down the drain for now, I feel he can still do something for his side even at his age.
And it can serve as an advice to prospects too; just remain focused on whatever you want to do and be disciplined.

I remember him being at Reading for a couple of seasons. We had high hopes for him and I don't remember him playing regularly - he was so incredibly inconsistent. Despite that, when he was good for us, he was absolutely unplayable. Quite a character from what I heard!

Here's a bit about his time at Reading (I like the bit that mentions his free kick like you do 🙂) - https://www.readingfc.co.uk/club/history/madejski-men/midfielder/royston-drenthe/

Thanks..I'll definitely read that too
