I was expecting Chelsea to go through despite all the trouble they are in right now because of the Abramovich problem, and yes they got through smoothly, Lille is just a step below Chelsea in quality even though they did put up a good fight. It was a good game to watch, and I do think Chelsea deserved the win.
The other one was a surprise, not Villarreal winning because odds were just slightly in favor of Juventus, what is surprising is the score. Ok, there were two penalties of which I only saw the first one, again I am left with some doubts about it, sometimes these are considered fouls at other times they aren't. I guess this penalty just decided the match, after this it seems Juventus gave up. That is another team that needs a complete overhaul.
So now we are down to eight teams, the calendar will be made on Friday, let's hope we don't see the same circus that happened last time for the round of 16. The qualified teams are:
Atletico de Madrid
Real Madrid
Villarreal
Manchester City
Liverpool
Chelsea
Bayern Munich
Benfica
So there are only four countries represented in the final eight, and I am betting Benfica will not be in the run for the cup, so this year, again we will have either an English, a Spanish, or a German champion. Eventually, this gets kind of boring. Of the eight, only Villarreal has never been in a Champions League final.
It was an impressive performance from both Villareal and Chelsea. It will be interesting to see their fixtures with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Can't wait!!
